Davenport, Iowa – The Quad Cities River Bandits dropped their third-straight game after a 9-7 loss to the Dayton Dragons on Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park.

Bandits’ starter Beck Way (2-3) took the loss after going 4.0 innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits while striking out six and walking five. Dayton right-hander Thomas Farr (2-6) earned the win after throwing 6.0 innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five.

Dayton got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a leadoff single from Jay Allen who stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error from catcher Kale Emshoff, and scored on a fielder’s choice by Mat Nelson.

The Quad Cities’ offense answered in the bottom of the first against Farr though with a leadoff double from Tyler Tolbert, who scored on a sacrifice fly from Darryl Collins, tying the game 1-1. The Bandits added another run in the bottom of the second thanks to a throwing error on Nelson, plating Herard Gonzalez to give the Bandits a 2-1 advantage.

The score didn’t hold for long though, as the Dragons used the longball to retake the lead against Way in the top of the third with a two-run homer from Austin Hendrick to put Dayton ahead 3-2.

Tolbert helped Quad Cities respond though in the bottom half, reaching on leadoff walk, advancing to second on a groundout from the next batter, Peyton Wilson, and then scoring on an RBI single from Collins to tie the game. Collins scored himself after the next batter, Juan Carlos Negret, singled to Hendrick in right field who misplayed the ball, allowing the Q.C. runner to score and push his squad to a 4-3 lead.

The Bandits held the lead heading into the top of the fifth before Way walked the leadoff man and hit the next batter, forcing manager Brooks Conrad to make a move to the bullpen for Chazz Martinez. The left-hander struggled to hold the lead, allowing his first five consecutive batters to reach via single, walk, hit by pitch, double and another hit by pitch, respectively, putting five Dayton runs on the board and dropping the Bandits to an 8-4 deficit.

Martinez was removed in favor of fellow lefty Parker Harm after failing to record an out after giving up three earned on two hits with one walk. Harm tossed 3.0 scoreless innings out of the ‘pen allowing no hits or walks while striking out six.

The Bandits’ offense was held in check until the bottom of the seventh inning when Cam Williams was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and scored on an RBI triple by Parker Bates against Dayton reliever Jake Gilbert. Back-to-back walks of Tolbert and Wilson loaded the bases for Collins who delivered an RBI double and brought Q.C. within a run, trailing 8-7.

However, the Bandits failed to cash in with runners in scoring position after Negret struck out swinging and Herard Gonzalez popped out. Emshoff walked to load the bases but Gilbert got out of the jam after ending a seven-pitch battle against Dillan Shrum with a strikeout.

Reliever Harrison Beethe tossed a scoreless eighth inning after allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

Dayton scored an insurance run off Anderson Paulino on an Ashton Creal RBI single in the top of the ninth, as the reliever gave up three hits and no walks with one strikeout.

The Bandits were set down in order over their final two innings against Gilbert and Donovan Benoit who earned a four-out save after striking out Collins and Negret to end the game.

Quad Cities looks to end the series with a split on Sunday as they send Chandler Champlain (1-1, 7.40) to the mound against Dayton’s Sam Benschoter (0-1, 3.60). First pitch between the River Bandits and Dragons is scheduled at 1:00pm at Modern Woodmen Park.
