Today's Game: The Quad Cities River Bandits (affiliate of the Houston Astros) host the Kane County Cougars (affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) in the second contest of a four-game series. This is the first of five series between the clubs in 2018. River Bandits-Cougars Season Series in 2018: Overall: River Bandits 1, Cougars 0. Modern Woodmen Park: River Bandits 1, Cougars 0.
Last Time Out: The River Bandits earned their first win of the season in impressive fashion on Monday night by carving up Kane County 11-1. They took the first lead in the second inning when Adrian Tovalin scored on an errant pick-off throw by Cougars starter Cole Stapler. J.J. Matijevic doubled the lead with a solo home run in the third. Kane County scored an unearned run off of Yohan Ramirez in the fourth, but the bandits answered immediately with an RBI single from Marcos Almonte in the bottom half of the same inning. Corey Julks blasted a two-run home run in the sixth to extend the Bandits lead to 5-1. The game was blown open during a six-run seventh inning. A two-run home run by Matijevic, a two-run double from Bryan De La Cruz and two Kane County errors caused the lead to balloon to ten. Ramirez and Cristian Javier combined to limit the Cougars to one unearned run and struck out 13
Rolling in Relief: During the first three games of the season, River Bandits relievers have combined to work 13.2 innings without allowing an earned run. After Cristian Javier's 4.0 shutout innings last night, relievers have allowed just two unearned runs this season and struck out 15 batters in those 13.2 innings. Parker Mushinski will pitch in relief today and the only other pitchers who have not toes the rubber are Carlos Sanabria and Colin McKee.
Matijevic Mashing: J.J. Matijevic blasted two home runs as part of his 3-4, three RBI day at the plate on Monday night against Kane County. It was the first two home-run game of his professional career and he is the first River Bandit to hit two home runs in the same game since July 19 of 2017 when both Ronnie Dawson and Josh Rojas accomplished the feat in the same game against Lansing.
