Quakes Fall to Giants on Opening Night

April 4, 2014

Rancho Cucamonga, CA -- Rancho Cucamonga's season got off to a disappointing start Thursday night with a 7-1 loss to the San Jose Giants. More than 3,400 fans at LoanMart Field watched the Giants score three runs in the first inning, while the Quakes could not get back into the ball game.

The night started with lots of excitement. Dodger legend Tommy Lasorda and Assistant GM DeJon Watson took the field prior to first pitch along with dignitaries from the city of Rancho Cucamonga. Fireworks and a helicopter flyover accompanied the national anthem at LoanMart Field. Things did not go as well for the Quakes once the game started.

Chris Anderson (0-1) didn't make it out of the first inning in his first California League start. The big righty faced eight hitters in two-thirds of an inning, giving up three earned runs on three hits. Freddie Cabrera relieved Anderson and minimized the first inning damage by striking out Chris Lofton with the bases loaded.

The Quakes threatened in the top of the second after a leadoff single by Steven Proscia. Chris Jacobs walked two batters later to give Rancho a pair of base runners with one out, but Brandon Dixon flied out and Jose Capellan grounded out to end the frame.

Rancho Cucamonga (0-1) got on the board in the home half of the fourth inning with a solo home run off the bat of Chris Jacobs. Jacobs, who is in his third year with the Quakes, led the offense with a double and a walk to go with his homer.

San Jose (1-0) answered back in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of runs off of returning Quake Dan Coulombe. Ben Turner drove in a run with an RBI single. The Giants' catcher finished the night with a team-best three RBIs. Mitch Delfino added another run with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Delfino led the way for San Jose offensively with three hits, two runs and a pair of runs batted in. San Jose finished the game with a dozen hits.

Rancho finished the evening with just four hits. Giants' starter Chris Stratton (1-0) dominated in his first California League start, striking out four and giving up just two hits in five innings of work. Ryan Bradley, Ian Gardeck and Jeff Soptic combined to pitch four innings of scoreless relief for Lenn Sakata's club.

The Quakes are back in action Friday night against San Jose. First pitch is at 7:05 pm. Los Angeles Dodger Josh Beckett will start for the Quakes in a rehab appearance for Rancho Cucamonga. Beckett's rehab appearance is sponsored by San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino. 17-year-old southpaw Julio Urias is expected to make his Quakes' debut and follow Beckett from the bullpen. It's also our first Family RV $1 Family Feast Night. Fans can get hot dogs, Pepsi products and ice cream sandwiches for just a dollar at LoanMart Field.
