Quakes Rally to Tie Storm, But Fall in Extras

Rancho overcomes 8-1 deficit to send game to extra innings
May 25, 2014

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Rancho Cucamonga rallied from an 8-1 deficit in the seventh inning to send Sunday's game to extra innings, but the Quakes fell to Lake Elsinore 10-9. The loss was Rancho's second in seven extra-innings contests.

Rancho Cucamonga (23-28) battled back to make it a three-run game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brandon Alger (1-1, 2.92) was in search of his third save of the year for Lake Elsinore (31-20), but the Quakes had other plans. With one on and one out, Corey Seager blasted a two-run home run to make it 9-8. Seager had two hits on the afternoon, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

Trailing 9-8, the Quakes were down to their final out against Brandon Alger with Aaron Miller up and the bases empty. Miller took Alger's 2-0 offering over the right-center field fence to tie the game at nine and complete the comeback.

Rancho, who entered the game 5-1 in extra-innings games, could not hold on in the 10th inning. Diego Goris' home run off of Rob Rogers (2-2, 2.12) gave Lake Elsinore a 10-9 lead that they would not relinquish. Goris finished the day 4-for-6 with two home runs and 4 RBIs. He has seven hits including three home runs in his last two games against the Quakes.

In the bottom of the 10th, Tyler Ogle singled with one out to put the tying run aboard. However, that was all the Quakes mustered against Matthew Shepherd. Shepherd struck out the side to earn his first save of 2014.

The big comeback began in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rancho trailed 8-1 after Hunter Renfroe's three-run home run in the top of the inning, but they were able to get those runs back. With two men on, Rob Garvey hit a three-run blast to right-center field off of Adam Cimber. It was the third home run in four games for Rob Garvey, who has five in 2014. Coming into this year, he had six home runs in three minor league seasons.

In the eighth inning, Rancho scored twice to pull within two. Chris Jacobs doubled to lead off the inning, and Aaron Miller drove him in with an RBI double over a leaping Renfroe in right field. Two batters later, Tyler Ogle's single plated Miller and the Quakes trailed 8-6.

Lake Elsinore added an insurance run in the top off the ninth. It was unearned, as Jeremy Baltz scored on Brandon Dixon's throwing error to make it 9-6. That set the stage for Rancho's dramatic bottom of the ninth.

There were a combined 31 hits in the game, including seven home runs. The Quakes hit three home runs in a three-inning span to tie the game. Every Rancho starter had at least one hit, and six Quakes had a pair.

With the loss, Rancho Cucamonga is now 0-6 against Lake Elsinore at LoanMart Field and the Quakes have their first series loss since the end of April.
