Rancho Avoids No-Hitter, But Not Sweep

Proscia with Quakes' only hit in loss to 66ers on Sunday
August 10, 2014

San Bernardino, CA - Rancho Cucamonga avoided getting no-hit, but not a fourth-straight loss as they fell to Inland Empire 4-1 Sunday evening at San Manuel Stadium. Steven Proscia's RBI double in the eighth inning broke up Ray Hanson's no-hit bid, but that was Rancho's only hit of the game as they were swept by their I-10 rivals.

Down 4-0, Rancho Cucamonga (26-24, 58-62) did not have a hit and only two men reached base for the Quakes against Ray Hanson (3-3, 3.11) through seven innings. A tiring Hanson walked Maynard on five pitches to open the eighth. Steven Proscia took the next pitch down the left-field line for an RBI double to break up the no-hit bid and make it 4-1.

Inland Empire (23-26, 48-71) took an early lead with two runs in the first inning against Tom Windle (10-7, 4.34). Sherman Johnson tripled to cap off an eleven-pitch battle with Windle, and he scored on an RBI single from Chad Hinshaw. Later in the frame, Hinshaw came home on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 in favor of the Sixers.

After giving up two runs on three hits in the first, Windle settled down. He did not allow a hit over his next four innings of work and only allowed one man to reach base over that time.

Inland Empire's next hit did some damage. With none on and one out in the bottom of the sixth, Dennis Raben hit a blast to right field to put the 66ers up 3-0. The home run was Raben's 23rd of the season and his sixth in seven games.

The 66ers added another run in the seventh inning to make it 4-0. Tom Windle was pulled after walking Sherman Johnson to load the bases with two outs. Craig Stem's first pitch in relief went all the way to the backstop, allowing Alex Allbritton to score from third. Tom Windle took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits in 6.2 innings.

Rancho's lone hit wasn't enough as the Quakes lost for the eighth time in nine games. Since an 18-2 start to the Second Half, Rancho is 8-22 over their past 30 contests. The Quakes fell to second place in the South Division with Lancaster's win over San Jose on Sunday.

The Quakes have Monday off before opening up a seven-game home stand on Tuesday with a game against the San Jose Giants. Rancho sends Chris Anderson (7-6, 4.93) to the mound against San Jose righty Martin Agosta (2-2, 9.68). First pitch from LoanMart Field is at 7:05 pm and the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports AM 1350 starting with the LoanMart Pregame Report at 6:50 pm.
