Rancho Thwarted by Late Stockton Rally in Loss

Quakes score twice in first, but give up three in ninth
August 24, 2014

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Julio Urias struck out nine batters for a third-straight outing, but the Stockton Ports rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to take down the Quakes 3-2 on Saturday night at LoanMart Field. The loss was Rancho's seventh in a row.

Rancho Cucamonga (29-33, 61-71) jumped out of the gates quickly with two runs in the first. Brandon Dixon started the rally with a triple off the right-field wall. Pratt Maynard cashed Dixon in with a single to centerfield that put the Quakes up 1-0. Two batters later, Maynard scored on an RBI single from Aaron Miller and Rancho had a 2-0 lead.

Pratt Maynard, who had three doubles in the series opener on Friday, went 2-for-4 on Saturday night. He raised his average on the season to .302.

Julio Urias gave Rancho yet another fantastic start. He went a season long 5.1 innings, striking out nine while walking just three and allowing two hits. It was the third-straight start that Urias struck out nine batters while going at least five innings.

Rancho Cucamonga's starters have now struck out 98 while walking just 22 over 78 innings in their last 13 games. Their ERA over that span is a stunning 2.31.

Dan Tillman relieved Urias, getting the Ports to leave two on in the sixth inning to keep Rancho's lead intact. Luis Meza and Craig Stem eached pitched scoreless innings of relief to get the game to the ninth.

Stockton (42-20, 78-53) had just three hits in the first eight innings, but the Ports would record five in the ninth alone against Rob Rogers (2-9, 4.87). He gave up three-straight hits to open up the inning, with Tyler Marincov's RBI single putting the Ports on the board. With Bobby Crocker up, a wild pitch by Rogers allowed Ryon Healy to score the tying run. Ryan Gorton completed the comeback with an RBI single up the middle that gave Stockton a 3-2 lead.

Rancho came up empty in the ninth inning against Stockton closer Austin House. Jeremy Rathjen led off with a base hit down the left-field line, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. The next two hitters were retired by House to end it.

Kris Hall (5-0, 4.28), who struck out one batter in a scoreless eighth inning, earned his fifth win of the year in relief for the Ports.

The loss was Rancho's seventh in a row, and it marked the third time in the team's last nine games that a team has come back from a ninth-inning deficit against the Quakes. Rancho has lost 12 games this year when leading after seven innings.
