August 30, 2014

Lake Elsinore, CA - Julio Urias allowed just one batter to reach in five shutout innings to earn his second win of the year in a 9-0 victory for Rancho Cucamonga over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night. The win put the Quakes in a tie with High Desert for a possible Wild Card berth in the postseason.

Julio Urias (2-2, 2.36) was dominant in five innings of work for the Quakes, allowing just one man to reach base. Benji Gonzalez doubled with two outs in the first inning and that was it. Urias retired the final 13 men he faced. He struck out four in five innings without walking a batter. He threw 45 of his 61 pitches for strikes. The win was his second of the season, and his first since May 21 at Inland Empire.

The offense came through for Rancho Cucamonga (32-35, 64-73) as well, scoring nine times on 11 hits. Rancho scored three in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Adam Law put the Quakes on the board with an RBI single, and Pratt Maynard drove in two with a base hit of his own later in the frame.

The Quakes scored four times in the eighth inning and twice in the ninth as well. Rancho batted around in the eighth, getting RBIs from Dillon Moyer, Adam Law and Erisbel Arruebarrena. In the ninth, Kyle Farmer made it 9-0 with a two-run double to left field. Farmer's two-bagger was Rancho's only extra-base hit of the contest.

The bullpen backed up Urias, shutting out Lake Elsinore (33-34, 73-64) over the final four innings. Rehabbing Dodger Chris Perez gave up just one hit in 1.2 innings and all ten pitches he threw were strikes. Luis Meza and Geoff Brown combined to finish it off for Rancho. The shutout was the team's seventh of the season.

Rancho's nine runs tied the most for the club in the month of August. Law led the way with three RBIs on three hits, while Maynard and Farmer each drove in a pair of runs. The Quakes had six hits with runners in scoring position in the contest.

The win combined with High Desert's loss put Rancho in a tie with the Mavericks for a Wild Card spot in the postseason with three games to play. Both teams have overall records of 64-73. Rancho has three games with Lake Elsinore remaining while the Mavericks have to face San Jose.

The four-game series continues on Saturday night. Brandon Martinez (0-0, --) makes his first start for the Quakes in 2014 opposite Matthew Shephard (5-1, 5.33) for Lake Elsinore. First pitch from The Diamond is at 6:05 pm and the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports AM 1350 starting with the LoanMart Pregame Report at 5:50 pm.
