Coming Soon - Two New Mascots

Team Requests Help from Local Schools in Naming of CHAMP's New Friends
February 25, 2013

MOOSIC, Pa. - CHAMP is about to get some new friends.  The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are preparing to announce two mascots to join CHAMP for the 2013 season.  The club needs help in naming CHAMP's pals, and the RailRiders are asking local elementary schools for their best ideas on the nomenclature of NEPA's latest and greatest costumed buddies.

The "Name the Mascots" contest, which runs from now until to March 15, will introduce a furry porcupine and a nine-foot tall superhero as the latest additions to the RailRiders' mascot crew.  CHAMP's new buddies will debut their good times and wacky antics at elementary school assemblies.  After the mascots entertain the crowd, kids in attendance will have the chance to answer three questions about each mascot.  Those questions will flesh out each mascot's name, where he came from and who his friends are.

Once all entries have been collected, the RailRiders' front office will decide upon the winners.  Each winning entry will earn a prize pack for a lucky local kid including access to PNC Field's Fun Zone, game tickets, merchandise and more.

"Since day one, we've wanted to get the public involved," said RailRiders president and general manager Rob Crain. "What better way to name a mascot than asking their biggest fans?  The 'Name the Team' contest was a great success, and we anticipate receiving some fantastic options from local kids for our new mascots."

Schools interested in having the two mascot additions perform at their assembly should contact community relations manager Ryan Beardsley by emailing him at [email protected], or by calling 570-969-2255 (ext. 3140).  The new mascots will be available after the assembly to pose for pictures and interact with fans.

The RailRiders' 2013 season gets underway with the grand opening of the reconstructed PNC Field on April 4 when the defending IL champion Pawtucket Red Sox come to town for a rematch of their 2012 playoff clash with SWB.  It will mark the first "Thirsty Thursday" promotion of the year with $1 beer specials and $1 Pepsi products along with a pre-game live band performance and post-game fireworks.  Partial and full-season ticket plans are now available.
