Franco Powers 'Pigs Past RailRiders

Roller Homers in Loss
May 13, 2014

Moosic, Pa. - Dean Anna went 3-for-4 and reached base four times, but the Lehigh Valley IronPigs clubbed out five extra base hits en route to an 8-4 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (19-18) Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park. The loss marked the second-straight defeat for SWB, while also dropping the club to 1-4 in the chase for the 2014 IronRail trophy.

SW's offense had some spark early, tallying a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Adonis Garcia for the early 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short lived as Lehigh Valley tallied eight runs through the games next four innings. Zach Nuding yielded two extra-base knocks in second that evened the game even at 1-1, before the 'Pigs tallied consecutive extra-base hits in the third that led to a three-run frame that pushed the game to a 4-1 advantage.

SWB answered with a run in the fifth after Jose Pirela began the frame with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Antoan Richardson. Richardson's second sacrifice fly of the year brought the contest to within two at 4-2.

Lehigh Valley plated four runs through the fourth and fifth, eventually chasing Nuding with two outs in the fourth after Ronny Cedeno and Tyson Gillies each reached on base hits. Jose Ramirez entered in favor of the right-hander and promptly allowed both inherited runners to score on a double by Maikel Franco. The final two IronPigs runs crossed on a single by Cedeno in the fifth that swelled the advantage to 8-2.

Kyle Roller added his first home run as a RailRider, driving in two runs with a long ball to left off reliever Seth Rosin in the seventh slashed the lead in half at 8-4.

The deficit proved too much to overcome as Nuding (1-2) was tagged for six earned runs in 3.2 innings while being slated with the loss. Lehigh Valley starter David Buchanan (5-0) scattered nine hits in giving up two runs to earn the win.

The RailRiders will continue an eight-game road trip through the IL North with the second of four games against the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs (Philadelphia Phillies), Wednesday, May 14 at 7:05 p.m. SWB tosses righty Joel De La Cruz (2-0, 1.64) to the hill while the Ironpigs send left-hander Greg Smith (3-0, 3.19) to the hill.  John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 6:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
