Timely Runs Lead RailRiders to 3-2 Win

Venditte Strikeouts Five in RailRiders Debut

Pawtucket, R.I. -  Pat Vidette stuck out all five batters he faced and combined with reliever Danny Burawa over 3.1 innings of relief Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium to help propel the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (21-21) to a 3-2 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium. Jose Pirela added two hits in the win, including driving in the games winning run.

The RailRiders first two runs crossed in the second inning as Kyle Roller led off the frame with a triple and was cut down on a throw by Red Sox first baseman Alex Hassan that allowed Dean Anna to reach on the fielder's choice. Pirela followed with a double that moved Anna to third, before both runners scored on an RBI single by Jose Gil that gave the RailRiders to 2-0 lead.

Pawtucket responded with a run of its own in the third. Mike McCoy reached on a single and moved to third on a double by Ryan Roberts before Hassan brought Pawtucket's first run around on a groundball that cut the lead in half, 2-1.

Zach Nuding tossed 5.2 innings of efficient ball, but was chased in the sixth after a home run by Ryan Lavarnway evened the game at 2-2. Venditte (1-0) a switch-handed pitcher entered the game for his first SWB appearance of the season and struck out his only batter faced in the sixth inning to end the Red Sox threat. Venditte struck out all five batters he faced before reliever Danny Burawa entered the game with an out in the eighth.

Pirela brought around the go-ahead run with a run-scoring RBI ground out in the eighth that plated Kyler Roller who reached on a hit by pitch for the 3-2 RailRiders leads.

Pawtucket starter Rubby De La Rosa tossed five innings in earning the no decision, while Rich Hill (1-2) was slated with the loss after allowing the go ahead run in the eighth.

The RailRiders will continue the second leg of an eight-game road trip with the game three against the Pawtucket Red Sox Monday, May 19 at 7:05 p.m. SWB sends righty Joel De La Cruz (1-1, 2.00) to the bump, while Pawtucket sends right-hander Allen Webster (2-2, 2.54) to the hill.
