Rainiers Fall Short at El Paso, 3-2

Series finale at Chihuahuas set for 5:35 p.m. tomorrow, June 3

EL PASO -- The Tacoma Rainiers let an early lead slip away and fell to the El Paso Chihuahuas 3-2 at Southwest University Park on Monday night.

The Rainiers took a 1-0 edge beginning in the third inning after outfielder Abraham Almonte scored on a line drive single hit by Jesus Montero with two outs. Tacoma's lead expanded to 2-0 thanks to a sacrifice fly notched by infielder Patrick Brady that plated Gabriel Noriega.

The advantage lasted until the Chihuahuas claimed the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Tacoma leading 2-1, Jonathan Galvez drove in the game-tying run with an RBI double in the fifth, and the go-ahead run scored thanks to a sacrifice fly hit by Tyler Greene one out later.

Tacoma has now lost each of their last four games and 13 of their last 15. Each of the team's last four losses has been decided by just one run.

The Rainiers combined to collect a total of seven hits against the Chihuahuas. The shortstop Noriega led the lineup after going 3-for-4 with three single and a run scored. The designated hitter Montero recorded the team's only other multi-hit effort and went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Starter James Gillheeney (1-5) was dealt the loss after surrendering three runs - two earned - on four hits in 5.0 innings. The left-hander walked one and fanned six in his eighth start with the Rainiers this season. Zach Miner (2.0) and Logan Kensing (1.0) combined for 3.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Tacoma (22-34) plays the final installment of the team's four-game series at El Paso (29-30) tomorrow, June 3. Right-hander Taijuan Walker (0-1, 12.00) is expected to make the second start of his Major League rehab assignment with the Rainiers in the contest against Chihuahuas right-hander Keyvius Sampson (2-4, 5.82).
