Rancho Cucamonga, CA- Tony Gonsolin tossed a season-long seven innings on Sunday for the Quakes, evading a sweep from the Lake Elsinore Storm in a 6-2 victory.
Behind the strong start from Gonsolin, a three-run second inning for the Rancho offense outlasted the Storm for the entirety of the contest.
With the bases loaded and one out in the inning, Cody Thomas delivered a two-run single to open the scoring for the Quakes against Lake Elsinore starter Reggie Lawson. Following a Hamlet Marte strikeout, Gavin Lux drove home Omar Estevez with a single, capping the second inning with a 3-0 lead.
Lawson was lifted from the game after 4.2 innings in favor of reliever Austin Smith who would go on to surrender a solo home run to Marte in the sixth to make it 4-1.
On the mound for the Quakes, Gonsolin allowed his only earned run on an Edward Olivares sacrifice fly in the third. The right-hander proceeded to cruise into the eighth and was replaced by Ryan Moseley following a leadoff walk. Elsinore's leadoff man, Matt Batten, scored on an infield throwing error in the inning, an unearned run to Gonsolin's line.
The Quakes added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, as Cristian Santana drove home Cody Thomas with a single and Marte scored on a wild pitch.
Working in the ninth with a 6-2 cushion, Jason Richman retired the side in order to secure the victory and the second win for Gonsolin (2-1) over the Storm this season.
Lawson (3-2), who was charged with all three runs in the Rancho second inning, was hit with the loss.
