Rancho Cucamonga, CA - In the regular season finale between a pair of South Division rivals, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes walked-off the Lancaster JetHawks by a final tally of 5-4.
After Jeren Kendall put the Quakes in front with an RBI triple in the bottom of the third, Casey Golden commenced a stretch of four unanswered runs by the JetHawks, smashing a solo homer in the top of the fourth. The other three tallies came in the top of the seventh, as Lancaster took a 4-1 lead late into the game.
Not going away quietly, Rancho pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth with a Hunter Feduccia two-run single, making it a one-run contest at 4-3.
The offense would continue to battle in the bottom of the ninth, facing the Cal League's premier closer in Tommy Doyle.
Brayan Morales started the frame with an infield single and Kendall followed two batters later with a bloop hit into left-center. Mayhem ensued after this point.
With runners on first and third, Miguel Vargas tied the game and reached on a botched ground ball by Lancaster third-baseman, Ryan Vilade. Marcus Chiu, with an opportunity to win the game, struck out to Doyle.
However, on the punchout, Vargas successfully executed a delayed steal. The steal took the catcher, Austin Bernard, off guard and his throw down to second base kicked off the glove of the infield, allowing the game-winning run to score. The error was officially charged to LeeMarcus Boys, the JetHawks' second-baseman.
The win went to Darien Nunez (1-0), who struck out four batters in two scoreless frames.
Doyle (1-2) shouldered his second blown-save and second loss of the season.
As Rancho hits the road for a brief road trip with a three-game set at Banner Island Ballpark, the Quakes will send RHP Andre Jackson (3-1) to the mound for game one, while the Ports counter with Oakland Athletics' rehabber, RHP Marco Estrada (0-0).
On Tuesday, August 13th, Rancho will return home for the start of a six-game home stand, opening up a three-game series against the Modesto Nuts. Tuesday's contest is a Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday, where 10 CRV-eligible bottles or cans will grant a free ticket to the game!
