Rancho Cucamonga, CA - In a marquee pitching tilt featuring Josiah Gray and MacKenzie Gore, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (47-34, 6-7) walked-off the Lake Elsinore Storm (42-39, 7-6) by a final tally of 2-1.
Both Gray and Gore held their respective opponents off the scoreboard in their outings on Tuesday, while Miguel Vargas made a Cal League debut to remember.
Gray, in a no-decision, tossed 6.2 scoreless frames with seven strikeouts, four hits and two walks. Despite Gray's extended stretch of dominance, this was his first scoreless outing since May 29th.
Gore, also in a no-decision, spun a magnificent seven scoreless innings with nine punchouts, three hits and three walks. In Gore's last two starts against the Quakes, he has a combined 13.2 innings with no runs and 18 strikeouts.
In the top of the eighth, the Storm finally broke through when Eguy Rosario plated Jeisson Rosario with a clutch, two out RBI knock off of Bryan Warzek.
However, after leaving six runners in scoring position throughout the first eight innings, Vargas altered that trend and capped off his first game as a Quake with an exclamation point. The Cuban native laced a walk-off two-run double into the left-field corner, plating Marcus Chiu from third and Deacon Liput from first.
In the series finale on Wednesday, RHP Andre Jackson (1-1) will take the mound as Rancho looks for the three-game sweep. As for the Storm, they'll send yet another highly-touted prospect to the bump in RHP Luis Patiño (4-6).
The Quakes complete their seven-game, seven-day home stand on Wednesday, as Ontario International Airport presents a Fourth of July tuneup with a firework spectacular!
