Lake Elsinore, CA - The Quakes and Storm split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon down at The Diamond. After dropping a 3-1 decision game one, Wills Montgomerie fired shutout baseball into the sixth inning, as Rancho held on for a 1-0 win to earn the split.
Jeter Downs provided the only run of game two, as he broke up a no-hit bid by Storm starter Ronald Bolaños (4-2) with a solo-shot in the fifth inning. His seventh home run of the year broke the scoreless tie, making it 1-0.
Montgomerie (4-0) didn't allow his first hit until the 5th and only allowed one hit over 5.2 innings. In the sixth though, he walked two and hit a batter and was removed in favor of Logan Salow. Salow left the bases loaded and protected the one-run advantage though, striking out Allen Córdoba to end the threat.
Salow would go on to work a scoreless seventh, earning his third save in as many tries this year.
In game one, Quakes' starter Michael Grove (0-2) gave up three runs over three inning, with Luis Campusano getting him for two hits and two driven in, giving the Storm a 3-0 lead after three.
Trailing 3-0 in the seventh, Starling Heredia tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by Brayan Morales against Evan Miller, but that's as close as the Quakes would get. Miller held on for his eighth save of the year, preserving the win for Luis Patiño (4-4), who scattered four hits over 5.1 innings of scoreless ball.
Depending on What Lancaster does in their game in San Jose on Tuesday night, the Quakes (29-21) will lead the South Division by either two or three games over the JetHawks and three and a half games over the Storm.
