Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes set new single-game high marks for runs and hits on Wednesday night against the San Jose Giants for a 16-5 win in the series opener at LoanMart Field.
A 19-hit effort for the Quakes was sparked early on as both offenses combined for seven runs in the first inning.
Dustin May allowed a two-run double to Heath Quinn in the first that gave the Giants and early 2-0 lead. Jeren Kendall tied the game in the home half with a two-RBI triple and Zach McKinstry finished Rancho's five-run first with a two-run homer.
The Quakes forced San Jose starting pitcher DJ Myers from the game after just two-thirds of an inning and Peter Lannoo entered to record the final out of the first.
Rancho went on to score five unanswered runs on the Giants bullpen, three against Rodolfo Martinez (3-8). Kendall capped a four-RBI game with a two-run homer in the fourth and Jared Walker went deep in the fifth. McKinstry positioned Rancho with a 10-5 lead after knocking in a run in the sixth with a single.
May (6-3) allowed five runs, four earned, and turned the game over to the bullpen after five complete innings of work.
Out of the bullpen Jason Richman allowed a solo home run to Johneshwy Fargas in the seventh as San Jose cut the deficit to 10-6.
In the bottom of the seventh the Quakes blew the game open with five more runs on six total singles and cruised the rest of the way to a 15-6 win. Richman covered the final three innings on the mound and notched his fifth save on the season.
The Quakes are now 9-1 against the Giants on the regular season and improve their second-half record to a league-best 22-5.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday with RHP Logan Webb scheduled to start for the Giants. Rancho's starting pitcher will be a game-time decision.
