San Bernardino, CA- The Quakes lost a tough one on Sunday night at San Manuel Stadium, surrendering a four-run lead and falling to Inland Empire in extras, 8-7.
The Quakes walked eight total batters after the fourth inning and began to see their advantage diminish when leading 6-2 in the eighth.
Ryan Moseley walked a pair in the eighth and the 66ers cut into the deficit with a RBI-single from Connor Justus to make it 6-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, the 66ers loaded the bases against Moseley with a pair of hits and a walk. David McKinnon scored on a wild pitch and Inland Empire tied the game at six with an RBI-groundout and a run-scoring double.
Omar Estevez began the tenth on second base and Cristian Santana quickly gave Rancho the lead on a base hit to right field, 7-6.
After recording the final out of the ninth, Elio Serrano returned to the mound looking for the win. Serrano struck out Justus, but then allowed a triple to Jordan Zimmerman that tied the game. MacKinnon followed with a single into center field, walking Inland Empire off at 8-7.
Serrano (0-1) was hit with the loss in his California League debut while Blake Smith (2-0), who allowed Rancho's run in the tenth, was positioned for the win.
Rancho managed most of their scoring in the early to middle innings. An RBI-triple from Zach McKinstry and a sacrifice fly from Rylan Bannon gave the Quakes a 2-1 lead in the third. Another pair of runs crossed in the fourth and Bannon smashed his 20th homer in the fifth to make it 5-2.
Santana maximized the four-run lead with a run-scoring single in the seventh before the bullpen unraveled in the eighth.
With the defeat, the Quakes were handed their 40th loss of the season and are now 55-40 overall, 20-5 during the second half. The Quakes will search for a two-game split of the series on Monday night with RHP Isaac Anderson (4-5, 3.66 ERA) scheduled to start on the mound. Anderson will be opposed by RHP Erik Manoah Jr. (2-7, 7.23 ERA) in the conclusion of the four-game set.
Rancho returns to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, July 18th to host the San Jose Giants in a three-game series and the opening of a six-game home stand.
