Lancaster, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes got a strong pitching performance in an unlikely place, as they defeated the Lancaster JetHawks by a final of 7-3 at the hitter-friendly Hangar in Lancaster.
Gerardo Carrillo and Wes Helsabeck combined to cover all nine innings, helping the Quakes take a two-game lead over second-place Lancaster and earning their first head-to-head win over the JetHawks in five tries in 2019.
Nick Yarnall had two hits and three RBIs to lead the way for Rancho's offense, who jumped all over Lancaster starter Lucas Gilbreath.
Yarnall tripled home Carlos Rincon in the second, then scored on a Starling Heredia RBI hit, making it 2-0 in the second. Yarnall struck again in the fourth, as he went deep for his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to up the lead to 4-0.
Drew Avans grounded into a double-play in the fifth, but on the play, Brandon Montgomery scored to give Rancho a 5-0 advantage.
Lancaster got two runs back in the last of the fifth against Carrillo, as Ramon Marcelino tripled home a pair of runners to make it 5-2.
The teams traded runs in the sixth, as Rancho took a 6-2 lead thanks to a Heredia RBI force-out against Gilbreath (2-1). The JetHawks got their last run against Carrillo in the bottom of the inning, as Luis Castro hit a homer to straight-away center field, making it 6-3.
Carrillo (2-2) allowed three runs on six hits over six frames, while punching out seven on the night, in earning the win.
After the Quakes added a run in the seventh, Helsabeck came on and scattered two base-runners over the final three innings. He struck out five over his three scoreless to earn his second save of the year.
Rancho (23-15) now has a two-game lead over the JetHawks (21-17) with three more to play in this current four-game series. On Tuesday, the Quakes will go with Leo Crawford (0-2), as he takes on Ryan Rolison (2-0) at 6:35pm.
