San Jose, CA- The Quakes scuffled defensively and allowed three costly unearned runs to score on Tuesday night, dropping game two of the series 8-7 at Municipal Stadium.
Carlos Rincon's multi home run night was drowned out by a pair of game-tying home runs from the Giants, who rebounded from a deficit three times in the contest.
Rancho got out to a 2-0 lead over the first four innings and was trending behind the strong pitching of Edwin Uceta. Rincon walked with the bases loaded in the first and popped his first of two home runs in the fourth. Uceta set down 12 of 13 batters faced over the first four innings, striking out six before the Giants woke up in the fifth.
Sandro Fabian singled and Kelvin Beltre launched a two-run homer to even the game back at two.
The Quakes followed by sending nine men to the plate in the sixth as the Giants bullpen called on three separate arms. Trevor Horn walked Rincon and Brandon Montgomery brought him around with a go-ahead single. Sandro Cabrera entered into the game, giving up an RBI-single to Connor Wong and walking Omar Estevez with the bases loaded. Franklin Van Gurp (1-0) recorded the final out of the inning as Rancho departed the frame with a 5-2 lead.
Uceta stepped back to the mound in the sixth and gave up a two-out three-run home run to Wander Franco as the Giants tied the game back up at five. Uceta settled with a no-decision, striking out eight over 5.2 innings in his California League debut.
Rincon jumped Rancho in front for the third time with a solo shot to left field in the seventh, his second home run of the game.
Michael Boyle recorded the final out of the sixth and stepped back to the mound in the seventh. Boyle recorded a quick two outs before loading the bases on a pair of singles and an infield error. Dillon Dobson proceeded to roll a ball up the first-base line and Nick Yarnall overthrew the covering pitcher, allowing two runs to score. Parker Curry entered the game and allowed a third unearned run home on a wild pitch as the Giants took an 8-6 lead.
Estevez doubled home a run in the eighth before Nolan Riggs came on in the ninth and locked up the game for the save.
The loss forces a rubber-match in the final game of the series scheduled for 12:30 PM on Wednesday afternoon. The Quakes will send RHP Isaac Anderson (7-5) to the mound and San Jose will counter with RHP DJ Myers (3-3).
The Quakes return home to LoanMart Field on August 10th to host the Lancaster JetHawks. The first 1,500 fans in attendance with receive a Walker Buehler bobble head courtesy of All-Star KIA. Tickets are available online at rcquakes.com or by calling (909) 481-5000.
