Quakes with 5 All-Stars, Sborz is Pitcher of the Year

Rancho leads league with five post-season award winners

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - California League Post-Season Awards have been announced and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are well represented with this season's end-of-year awards.

The Quakes have a league-high five Post-Season All-Stars as well as the California League Pitcher of the Year, Josh Sborz. Those All-Stars include Sborz, pitcher Andrew Sopko, third baseman Matt Beaty, shortstop Erick Mejia and designated hitter Johan Mieses.

Sborz, now a member of the Double-A Tulsa Drillers since being promoted the first week of August, left the Cal League with the top ERA and still owns the top spot, with an ERA of 2.66. Sborz fanned 108 hitters over 108.1 innings, while walking just 30 batters, finishing with an 8-4 mark over 20 games (19 starts).

Sopko, who combined with Sborz to make the best 1-2 combo in the league, was also promoted to Double-A Tulsa in the first week of August. He finished with an 11-2 record over 18 games (17 starts) and what was the third-best ERA in the league at the time of his promotion, at 3.26. He struck out 99 hitters over 99.1 innings and his 11 wins are still tied for the league-lead. 

Beaty has been among the Cal League leaders in a number of different categories throughout the year. He currently is hitting .292 with ten home runs and 82 RBIs, which is second in the league. 

Mejia has had a terrific offensive year, leading all current Cal League shortstops with a .292 average. He has four home runs and 47 driven in, to go along with a team-high 24 stolen bases and a league-best 12 triples.

Mieses is having an incredible August, which has helped him grab the league-lead in home runs. Nine August long-balls in just 20 games gives him a league-best 27 home runs. The 21-year-old also is tied for the league-lead with 59 extra-base hits and is fourth with a .528 slugging percentage. He's also knocked in 70 runs, seventh in the Cal League.

Luis Urias of the Lake Elsinore Storm was named as the League's Most Valuable Player, as the 20-year-old is second in the league with a .324 average, to go along with five home runs and 40 RBIs. Urias was also named Rookie of the Year.
