Rancho Cucamonga, CA - In a hard-fought battle on Saturday night, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (45-33, 4-6) were edged out by the Lancaster JetHawks (40-38, 6-4) by a final tally of 6-4 in 12 innings.
Trailing 2-0, Jeter Downs struck two batters into the bottom of the first with a two-run, opposite field shot to knot up the contest after just one inning of play. Brayan Morales and Marcus Chiu followed with a pair of two-out RBI singles in the second and the third, respectively, making it a 4-2 lead after three.
However, Lancaster starter, Antonio Santos, settled in and retired 12 out of the final 14 batters he faced. The JetHawks' offense officially took Santos off the hook, thanks to Casey Golden's solo shot in the sixth and Luis Castro's game-tying RBI infield single with two outs in the top of the ninth.
Austin Moore continued the pitching prowess and some for Lancaster, as he struck out nine batters in his three innings of relief, including three punchouts with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th to extend the tilt.
The JetHawks finally broke through with two runs in the top of the 12th, with a Castro RBI double and a wild pitch that plated another.
Salvador Justo finally closed the lid on the game with a 1-2-3 inning for his seventh save of 2019.
The win went to Tommy Doyle (1-1), while Connor Strain (0-2) shouldered the loss.
Quakes' starter Leo Crawford pieced together another solid start in the second half, tossing 5.1 innings with three runs (one earned) and eight strikeouts.
On Sunday, as Rancho has their sights set on a series victory, they'll send LHP Austin Hamilton (4-1) to the mound. Lancaster, hoping to salvage a split in the finale, will call upon LHP Lucas Gilbreath (3-5).
Day baseball from LoanMart Field on Sunday features a Postgame Kids Run the Bases, presented by the Smile Generation. Also, the Quakes are home until Wednesday, when they will cap the seven-hame home stand with a firework spectacular on July 3rd, presented by Ontario International Airport.
