San Bernardino, CA- The Quakes fell on the wrong side of a low-scoring affair Saturday night and were shutout for the sixth time on the season as the 66ers walked off in the ninth, defeating Rancho 1-0.
Despite tying a season-long outing with seven shutout innings, Leo Crawford's strong night at San Manuel Stadium lacked an offensive backing.
The Quakes had a chance to break the scoreless tie with two runners in scoring position and no outs in the eighth. Logan Landon flew out to left field and Cody Thomas was thrown out at home attempting to score.
Crawford allowed just two hits and struck out four over his start and was replaced by Connor Strain to open the eighth. Strain wrapped up the inning on a 4-6-3 double-play but ran into trouble during the final frame.
Strain (0-1) allowed three consecutive singles to begin the ninth and Marshall Kasowski inherited the bases loaded from the pen. Kasowski punched out David MacKinnon swinging, but Jonah Todd followed with the game-winning single to walk Inland Empire off at 1-0.
Jorge Tavarez (1-0) covered the final three innings for Inland Empire behind starting pitcher Nate Bertness and was positioned for the win on Saturday night.
The loss evens the four-game road series at a game apiece and the Quakes will pick up action again on Sunday at 5:35 PM. Following the promotion of Tony Gonsolin to double-A Tulsa prior to the game, Rancho's starting pitcher is still to be determined for Sunday. Inland Empire will send RHP Luis Madero (1-0) to the mound in his second start of the season for the 66ers.
Rancho returns to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, July 18th to host the San Jose Giants in a three-game series and the opening of a six-game home stand. It will be a Bark in the Park Wednesday at LoanMart Field with $3 pet passes available at the ticket office. Game tickets are available at rcquakes.com or by calling (909) 481-5000.
