Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Four extra-base hits were all it took for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Tuesday evening, as they opened a three-game set at LoanMart Field with a 5-1 victory over the Rawhide.
Two home runs and a pair of triples put the Quakes in the win column against the North Division-leading Rawhide, who took two of three from the Quakes at LoanMart Field just less than two weeks ago.
The main reason that four hits worked on Tuesday is that the Rancho pitching staff held the Visalia offense to just three hits. Michael Grove, Wes Helsabeck, Melvin Jimenez, Ryan Moseley and Logan Salow combined to allow three hits, three walks, while striking out 13 hitters.
The Rancho offense got a solo homer from Devin Mann in the second for a 1-0 lead, his seventh of the year.
Visalia answered in the fourth, getting an unearned run off of Helsabeck (3-0) to even the game at 1-1 on a sac fly off the bat of Luis Basabe.
That tie game was short-lived though, as Drew Avans blasted his second of the year, a two-run shot off Bain (4-2) to make it 3-1 in the fourth.
A Nick Yarnall two-run triple in the seventh opened things up, making it 5-1 against Visalia reliever Jayson McKinley.
Salow retired the final six hitters of the game in a non-save situation, wrapping up the win for Rancho.
The Quakes (27-18) maintain their three-game lead over Lancaster, who won on Tuesday night over Inland Empire. On Wednesday, Josiah Gray (0-0) will throw for Rancho, while Visalia will counter with Matt Mercer (1-2) with first pitch slated for 7:05pm.
Wednesday night is another Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark, as four-legged friends are welcome with the purchase of a three-dollar pet pass. Proceeds will benefit the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Shelter. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field…Go Quakes!
