Rancho Cucamonga, CA - To take the final regular-season series of the year, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes handled the Visalia Rawhide by a final tally of 8-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Enjoying splendid starting pitching and a big bottom-of-the-fifth frame, the Quakes (73-51, 32-24) left the Rawhide (77-45, 33-23) with a sour taste in their mouths if they are to rematch one another in the Cal League Title.
The Boys in Blue exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the home half of the fifth, spearheaded by a pair of hits in the inning from both Jeren Kendall and Brayan Morales. Kendall, at the top of the lineup, paced Rancho's offensive prowess, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
As five other Quakes' hitters recorded multi-hit efforts, Jeter Downs was another bat to stand out on Sunday. Downs produced a 2-for-4 day, with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.
While the runs (8) and hits (14) did not come at a premium in the series finale, Gerardo Carrillo's (3-9) pitching performance might of been the most impressive aspect of the drubbing. The right-hander earned his first win since May 13th, going 5.2 innings with one earned run on two hits and eight strikeouts.
On the other side, Bryan Valdez (2-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing one earned run across four frames.
Rancho will enjoy an off-day on Monday, and then will open up a three-game set at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore on Tuesday. In game one, LHP John Rooney (3-1) is tabbed to start for the Quakes, while RHP Reiss Knehr (3-4) will go for the Storm.
The Quakes will hit the road for a seven-game road trip, and will not return to LoanMart Field until Tuesday, August 27th. This will be your final chance to see Rancho play in the regular season, as it will represent the final home stand of the year... until the PLAYOFFS.
