(Reading, PA) - Needing a miracle to keep their postseason aspirations alive, the Reading Fightin Phils (62-68) had their fates sealed when the Thunder secured the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division with a win in Hartford. To boot, the Sea Dogs (58-73) were ruthless in Sunday afternoon's home finale, grinding out 10 runs on 12 hits to get lefthander Daniel McGrath (3-3) to .500 with the win.
Reading got on the board first when Pedro Florimón hit a home run to left two batters into the home first. But the lead didn't last long before the Sea Dogs went ahead for good in the third off Blake Quinn .
Number nine batter Johnny Bladel led off with a double and later scored on a game-tying single from Chad De La Guerra . Bobby Dalbec followed by showing off his prolific power with a three-run homer and a 4-1 Sea Dogs lead. Two more base hits kept the line moving, with the last one coming on a Chris Madera single to go up 5-1.
The Fightin Phils final run came across in the bottom of the fourth when Damek Tomscha led off with a single before a couple of wild pitches brought him home. Austin Listi also extended his on-base streak to 13 straight with a single, adding one more in the bottom of the eighth to finish 2-for-4.
Portland put their stamp on the ballgame with a four-run top of the fifth and José Taveras on in relief. Luke Tendler's two-run homer and an RBI single by Jeremy Rivera highlighted five hits in the inning to put Portland ahead 9-2. They'd score their final run on their third homer when De La Guerra went deep with two outs in the top of the eighth. The last four innings belonged to Seth McGarry , who matched a season-high with three innings, and Jeff Singer , who tossed a 1-2-3 ninth in his return from Triple-A.
