Meet Lee Smith Aug. 25

June 13, 2013

Each season, the Rochester Red Wings offer their fans the opportunity to get a free autograph from former Major League Baseball stars as part of our promotions schedule. Over the past few years, Wings fans have enjoyed appearances by Baseball Hall of Famers Paul Molitor, Harmon Killebrew, Rich "Goose" Gossage, and Dennis Eckersley, and former big league stars including Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, Tug McGraw, Mookie Wilson, Bill Lee, Steve Garvey, Jose Canseco, Dave Stewart and many more.

To insure that as many fans as possible have the chance to meet our special guests and get an autograph, fans are reminded that

  • There is a limit of one autograph per fan
  • There will be a posted time frame for the autograph sessions (listed below)
  • Time does not permit fans to ask to pose for individual photos with our featured guest
  • Personalized and/or customized inscriptions will be signed at the discretion of our featured guest
  • There may be a restriction on what type of items will be signed. When we are made aware in advance that a restriction will be in place, we will post them here and on our promotions schedule; ultimately, the decision on what to sign or not sign will be made by our featured guest.
  • The gates will open at the scheduled time for each autograph appearance, regardless of the weather or the weather forecast. The autograph session will take place, regardless of whether the game is played or not.

All autograph sessions will take place in front of the Red Wings Hall of Fame, first base concourse between Mama Mittsy's Pizza Kitchen and Pop 'N' Hots (unless otherwise specified below). Fans are welcome to bring one item of their own to be signed; baseballs and photos will be available for purchase in the autograph area.

Gaylord Perry achieved two of pitching's most magical milestones with 314 wins and 3,534 strikeouts. Lee Smith Sun. Aug. 25, presented by Legacy Financial Planning, LLC www.LegacyFP.com
gates open at 12 noon. Autograph session from 12-12:45 p.m., 1:15-2:00 p.m.

Lee Smith is ranked third on the all-time saves list. Smith amassed 478 career saves over his 18-year Major League career while playing with eight different teams. The seven-time All-Star held the Major League saves record for 14 years until Trevor Hoffman eclipsed his mark in 2006. Only Hoffman and Yankees' great Mariano Rivera have more saves than the Louisiana native. A second round pick by the Cubs in 1975, Smith posted a sub-three ERA and a club-record 180 saves over eight years in Chicago (1980-87). After a couple years in Boston, the hard-throwing right-hander was dealt to St. Louis in 1990 for 2012 Red Wings hitting coach Tom Brunansky. Smith put up back-to-back dominant seasons in 1991 and '92 with the Cardinals leading the National League in saves and finishing in the top five in Cy Young voting both seasons.
