Twins re-sign four more former Red Wings

November 4, 2013

The Rochester Red Wings announced on Monday that the Minnesota Twins have re-signed four former Red Wings to minor league deals for the 2014 season. Among those returning to the Twins organization are OF Wilkin Ramirez, C/OF Dan Rohlfing, INF Deibinson Romero and LHP Aaron Thompson.

Plagued by injuries last season, Wilkin Ramirez appeared in just 35 games for the Twins in 2013 hitting .272 with six RBI. Ramirez, 28, missed 69 games after suffering a concussion on May 25 and then missed the final 30 games of the year when he fractured his left tibia by fouling a ball off his leg on August 29. This will be Ramirez's third season in the Twins organization after signing as a minor league free agent following the 2011 season. The right-handed hitting outfielder spent the majority of the 2012 campaign in Rochester where he hit .276 and collected a team-leading 54 RBI in 98 games with the Red Wings.

Dan Rohlfing split the 2013 season between New Britain (AA) and Rochester setting career highs in games played (112), average (.267), hits (100) and RBI (42). The 24-year-old was a spark plug for the Red Wings offense upon his first-ever promotion to Triple-A in late May as he hit .397 over his first 17 games with the Red Wings. On June 15, Rohlfing capped a five-run, 9th inning rally with a two-run, walk-off single against Gwinnett. Overall, the Twins 14th round pick in 2007 hit .314 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 26 games for the Wings.

After visa issues in the Dominican Republic delayed the start of his season by over a month, Deibinson Romero joined the Red Wings in late May to make his Triple-A debut after a brief stint in New Britain. Romero manned the hot corner for much of the season, hitting .266 with 10 homers and 50 RBI in 86 games with the Red Wings. The 2014 season will be his 10th in the Twins system after signing as a 17-year-old in 2004.

Aaron Thompson returns to the Twins organization after spending the majority of the 2013 campaign coming out of the Red Wings bullpen where he posted a 3.48 ERA in 44.0 innings. The southpaw was named the Twins Minor League Pitcher of the Month in May when he recorded a 1.26 ERA and five saves over 11 combined appearances with New Britain and Rochester. Thompson, a former first round pick of the Marlins in 2005, originally signed with the Twins as a free agent in December of 2011.

As previously announced, INF James Beresford, INF Doug Bernier, OF Jermaine Mitchell, RHP Lester Oliveros and RHP Virgil Vasquez have also re-signed with the Twins this offseason.

The Red Wings open the 2014 season on Thursday, April 3 against the Buffalo Bisons at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY. The Wings 18th season at Frontier Field commences two days later on Saturday, April 5 vs. Buffalo. For season ticket or group information, call (585) 454-1001 or visit RedWingsBaseball.com.
