Memphis Tops Nashville In Homestand Opener, 7-4

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds opened a 12-game homestand with a 7-4 victory over the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds on Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

With the win, Memphis (30-30) returns to .500 and trails division-leading Nashville by 1.5 games.

Third baseman Scott Moore (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, R) clubbed his sixth homer and drove in three runs. Outfielder Stephen Piscotty (2-for-4, 2 RBI) added two hits and two RBIs.

Memphis batters worked a season-high 11 walks in the victory, two short of a franchise record.

Redbirds starter Zach Petrick (3-3) picked up the victory, allowing three runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander also fanned four and walks four. Closer David Aardsma hurled another hitless outing to convert his 11th save.

Memphis scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first as Shane Robinson (2-for-3, RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, K)singled, moved to second on a groundout, and came around to score on a Piscotty infield base combined with a Nashville throwing error.

Moore advanced the Memphis lead to 3-0 in the third with his sixth homer of the season, a two-run blast down the right field line.

The Redbirds' lead remained three runs after both teams traded three-run rallies in the fifth. Nashville's damage was highlighted by a Jeff Bianchi RBI double and the first home run of the night by Hector Gomez.

Sounds starter Ariel Pena (4-5) got himself in some trouble and removed from the contest in the bottom of the frame after walking the bases loaded with no outs. After relieved by former Redbird Michael Blazek on the mound, Moore brought home the first run with an infield groundout. Piscotty followed by hammering a line drive two-run single up the middle.

Gomez later went yard again in the seventh, a solo shot onto the TruGreen Bluff off reliever Jorge Rondon

Robinson provided an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single up the middle, pushing the Redbirds lead back to three runs at 7-4.

The two Tennessee rivals square off at 7:05 pm CT on Friday night at AutoZone Park. Memphis will send right-hander Scott McGregor (1-5, 6.66) to the mound. LHP Tom Gorzelanny (0-0, 1.59) will make a rehab start for Nashville, and will be backed up by Brewers top prospect and righty Jimmy Nelson (6-1, 1.64). The Redbirds will be giving away 2,000 Stan Musial bobbleheads when gates open at 5 pm during another Coors Light Block Party.
