Redbirds Drop Opener In Nashville, 5-2

Adron Chambers Records Two of Memphis' Four Hits
April 25, 2013

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds were handed a 5-2 defeat by the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds on Thursday night at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Adron Chambers snapped out of an 0-for-21 skid to go 2-for-5 with a double for the Redbirds. Oscar Taveras and Brock Peterson accounted for the other two hits.

It marked the first time that Memphis has lost when scoring first this season and the first come-from-behind win for Nashville. Memphis was also undefeated in series openers before tonight.

Memphis starter Tyler Lyons allowed one unearned run on three hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. The left hand-hander also struck out nine batters on the night, which is most by a Redbirds starting pitcher in 2013.

The Redbirds were held hitless through the first four frames until Chambers singled to center. Two batters later, Taveras smoked a ball that barely missed the second base umpire and into center field to score Chambers.

The Sounds capitalized on a couple of two-out runs in the sixth to go ahead 2-1. Reliever Maikel Cleto entered the contest and allowed an RBI base hit to the first batter he faced. Cleto then hit his next batter and walked two more to force in the go-ahead run.

Nashville added another run in the next inning as Dayton Buller struck out but reached on a wild pitch. Buller moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored as Hunter Morris blasted a doubled to the wall in center.

The Redbirds scored their other run in the top of the eight. Brock Peterson extended his road hitting streak to 10 games with a double to right field. He would score two batters later when Jermaine Curtis hit a deep sacrifice fly to right center.

The Sounds put the game out of reach with two run in the bottom of the eighth against Sam Freeman. After an inning-opening hit by pitch and walk, Caleb Gindl hit a triple over Taveras' head in center.

Cleto was charged with a blown save and loss with two runs allowed in 1 1/3 innings. Freeman also gave up a pair of runs on three hits in an inning.

Hellweg yielded one run on two hits and four walks in five innings. Chris Jakubauskas (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless for the victory.

The Redbirds and cross-state rival Sounds continue their series at 7:05 p.m. CT on Friday night at Greer Stadium. Memphis left-hander Nick Additon (1-1, 5.79) takes the hill against Nashville righty Mike Fiers (0-0, 000).
