Redbirds Walk Off Over Nashville In Fifth Straight Win

Two-Run Ninth Capped By Luis Mateo's Game-Winning Hit

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds won their fifth straight game with an exciting come-from-behind 2-1 walkoff win over the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds on Monday night at AutoZone Park.

Memphis (43-46) has now won a season-best five straight games, matching their longest win streak since the club ended the 2012 campaign with five victories from August 31-September 3. It was the team's sixth last at-bat win this season.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the ninth against reliever Donovan Hand (1-5), Xavier Scruggs led off with a single and later rounded the bases to score the tying run on a RBI single to deep second base by pinch hitter Jermaine Curtis. Two batters later with Audry Perez on third and one out, Luis Mateo hit a ball to deep short that brought home the winning run.

After previously surrendering a career-high eight runs in relief to the Sounds last Tuesday at Nashville, Memphis starter Zach Petrick allowed one run over seven strong innings for a no-decision. The right-hander scattered six hits, walked none, and struck out six in his sixth quality start.

Brewers top prospect and PCL All-Star pitcher Jimmy Nelson threw seven shutout innings of four-hit ball for a no-decision. The right-hander walked two and struck out four on the night, lowering his minor league-leading ERA to 1.46 on the season. In three starts against Memphis this season, Nelson is a combined 2-0 with a 0.35 ERA (1er/25.2ip) and 16 strikeouts.

The top two batters in the Memphis lineup occupied by outfielders Shane Robinson (2-for-4) and Randal Grichuk (3-for-4) went a combined 5-for-8.

Nashville plated its only run of the night in the top of the sixth as Elian Herrera hit a one-out double to right field and promptly came around to score on a Hector Gomez soft blooper to center.

Eric Fornataro (2-2) threw two shutout innings in relief for the win.

Memphis and Nashville continue their four-game series at 7:02 pm CT on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park. Left-hander John Gast will toe the rubber and be faced by right-hander Taylor Jungmann (4-5, 5.55).
