On Tuesday, Minor League Baseball officially canceled the 2020 season. Although not unexpected—fans paying attention to Major League Baseball and the impact of COVID-19 knew this was coming—it still hurt to see the news, officially.

I love minor league baseball and am grateful for every night I’ve spent at Greater Nevada Field. In my biased opinion, there’s no better place to watch a ballgame than Downtown Reno. Our field is perfect, the beer selection is good and I miss our hot dogs almost as much as I miss photographing the Nevada sunsets from the right-field berm.

Although I am cautiously excited about baseball's big-league return later this month and will tune in to the truncated season, my attention is on next season and the return of Aces baseball.

My favorite baseball is Minor League Baseball. And I’m not alone.

Did you know more than 40 million fans went to a minor league game last season? And that two-thirds of the country lives less than 50 miles from a minor league stadium. The minors are affordable, fun and hugely accessible.

That said—without a vaccine and/or immunity—the only way we’re going to get back to baseball at Greater Nevada Field is if we suppress the pandemic and lower COVID-19’s reproduction rate. As it stands, one of the most effective ways to slow the spread of the Coronavirus is to wear a mask or face covering. Which is why—in Nevada (and many other states)—masks are mandatory.

So, be like 2017 National League Championship Series MVP and World Series champion, Cody “Boss” Ross, and wear a mask when you leave the house.
