Giants ink David Hernandez to MiLB deal

Sacramento native bolsters bullpen options, adds experience

The San Francisco Giants agreed to terms today with 31-year-old reliever David Hernandez, formerly of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Hernandez attended Elk Grove High School and played collegiately at Cosumnes River College before being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2005. The right-hander has seven years of major league experience under his belt and owns a 28-39 record with a 4.10 ERA in 379 appearances. Last season with the Phillies, Hernandez fanned 80 batters in 72 2/3 innings and registered 32 walks.

When asked Tuesday about signing with the Giants, Hernandez called it "an easy decision."

Hernandez could find himself in Sacramento this season due to the crowded bullpen in San Francisco, which would allow him the opportunity to pitch in front of his family and friends. However, he brings a wealth of big league experience that could be a valuable veteran presence on a younger Giants bullpen.
