River Cats Pull Away Early for 20-4 Win

June 23, 2013

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Stephen Vogt reached base five times, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs, five RBIs, two walks and a double, to lock down a 20-4 River Cats victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Sunday night at Raley Field.

Vogt put the Cats on the board first in the second inning, scoring Jeremy Barfield and Grant Green with a two-out double to center field for his 38th and 39th RBIs on the year. After a Colorado Springs run in the third inning brought the Sky Sox to within one, the River Cats followed up in the next frame with four runs off the bats of Michael Taylor and Vogt to build their lead to five.

Sacramento-native Tim Wheeler responded in the fourth inning to cut the Sky Sox deficit to three with a two-run blast to right field. The River Cats would not be fazed though, as back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth secured the 20-4 victory. Three RBIs off of two hits by Scott Moore along with a three-run homer by Michael Choice-his 11th of the year-highlighted the scoring.

With three runs scored, Taylor broke Esteban German's franchise-record 234 career runs as a River Cat. Moore's 2-for-5, five-RBI night at the plate was his 12th multi-RBI game of the season, bringing him into a tie with Green for most on the team. Sacramento starter Bruce Billings picked up his PCL-leading ninth win of the season behind the flurry of run support, giving up four runs in 6.2 innings pitched.

Colorado Springs starter Jeff Francis was tagged with the loss. Making his first start in the PCL since June 3, the lefty was knocked around for six runs on nine hits in 3.0 innings of work.

The River Cats continue their four-game series with the Sky Sox on Throwback Monday presented by Cache Creek at Raley Field. Right-hander Travis Banwart (4-3, 4.50 ERA) is set to take the hill for the Cats, with Drew Carpenter (1-3, 6.91 ERA) set to oppose him.
