The IronPigs got on the board first with a Austin Listi three-run home run off Fernando Romero in the top half of the first, to give the Pigs an early 3-0 lead.
The Red Wings answered right back in the bottom half of the first and cut the the IronPigs lead to one. Drew Maggi got things started for the Wings by taking first after being hit by a pitch. Wilin Rosario came to the plate and on the first pitch he saw, off Lehigh Valley's starter Tyler Viza, Rosario took him yard to left. Rosario's home run had an estimated distance of 413 feet landing over the bullpen, in front of the Vanderstyne Toyota sign, making it a 3-2 ball game.
Romero, just off the injured list, served as the opener and pitched one inning allowing two hits, three unearned walks, zero walks, and one strikeout. Romero threw 17 pitches, 12 for strikes. Lewis Thorpe took over on the mound to begin the second inning. .
In the bottom half of the third Nick Gordon came up to the plate and delivered a solo home run to right-center to tie the game at 3-3. Gordon's home run hit the top of the right field video board with an estimated distance of 419 feet.
Following a scoreless fourth, the IronPigs got back on the board with an RBI single to left. The one out knock gave the Pigs a 4-3 lead. Thorpe found himself in a jam with one out and a runner on first and second and he was able to escape - striking out one and getting an inning ending grounder to keep the Wings' deficit to one.
To begin the sixth the Red Wings called to the bullpen. Cody Allen came into the game, making his first Red Wings appearance since being signed by the Twins June 24.
Thorpe finished with four innings pitched allowing two hits, one run which was unearned, zero walks, and three strikeouts. He threw 73 pitches, 50 for strike.
Allen struck out the first batter he faced, but the next batter he faced did not go Allen's or the Red Wings' way. Allen allowed a solo home run to Jan Hernandez, giving the 'Pigs a 5-3 in the top half of the sixth.
In the bottom half of the sixth the Brent Rooker struck out, then shared his displeasure at the call with home plate umpire Alex Tosi and Rooker was ejected. Jimmy Kerrigan replaced Rooker in the lineup.
Allen pitched one inning, allowing one hit, one run, and one walk. He threw 25 pitches with 17 for strikes. Cody Stashak came on in relief to begin the top of the seventh.
Viza worked 6.0 innings, allowing just three hits and three earned runs, with a walk and six strikeouts. Viza threw 85 pitches, 56 for strikes.
The Wings had a scoring opportunity in their half of the eighth inning, against Connor Brogdon. A single and walk put runners at first and second with two outs. That';s when Rosario drilled a 2-0 pitch into the left field corner, with Gordon and Kerrigan coming all the way around to tie the game at 5-5. The hit gave Rosario four RBI on the day, and knocked Brogdon out of the game in favor of Kyle Dohy.
Stashak notched two scoreless relief innings, with Gabriel Moya taking over on the mound in the top of the ninth inning. After a one-out single, Matt McBride lined a home run into the Lehigh Valley bullpen to give the IronPigs a 7-5 advantage.
In their half of the ninth inning, the Wings put their first two batters on base after consecutive walks to Jaylin Davis and Ronald Torreyes. Telis flew out to left field, and Brian Schales worked a full count before walking to load the bases. Gordon walked to force in a run and pull the Wings to within one at 7-6. That was th eend for Dohy, with Edubray Ramos coming out of the bullpen to pitch to Maggi. With an 0-1 count, Maggi appeared to get hit by a pitch which would have forced in the tying run - but umpire Alex Tosi ruled Maggi lifted his leg to get hit intentionally. Manager Joel Skinner argued the call and was ejected, and the pitch was called a ball. Maggi lined out to third base for the second out, and Kerrigan flew out to end the game.

THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
2009 - Following a difficult setback Saturday night, the Red Wings came back Sunday afternoon to defeat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5-3 at Frontier Field. Justin Huber got the game winning hit as he drilled an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning. The winning rally started when Dustin Martin reached first base on a walk with one out. After Martin stole second, Huber drove in Martin to give Rochester a 4-3 lead. Matt Macri added an insurance run with an RBI single. Macri made an outstanding defensive play to end the game, taking away a base hit from Terry Tiffee with a runner on base. Rochester starter Reid Santos was coming off an outstanding start July 7, when he picked up the win in Syracuse. Santos hurled a second consecutive quality start, going five innings and allowing two runs (one earned). Santos was relieved with some quality bullpen pitching, with Rob Delaney earning the victory after escaping a huge jam in the top of the eighth inning.
