RockHounds Lose Series Opener to Springfield

By Bob Hards / Midland RockHounds | April 13, 2018 4:16 PM ET

A six-run third inning was the difference as Springfield defeated the RockHounds, 10-5, in the Cardinals' home opener Thursday night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first before Eli White's third-inning solo home run cut the lead in half.

Springfield then sent 11 men to the plate in the home half of the third, scoring a half-dozen runs in the process. The Cardinals twice strung together four consecutive hits, capped by Darren Serefina's two-run double (see below) and a two-run single from Edmundo Sosa.

The 'Hounds trimmed the lead to 8-4 on Tyler Ramirez' two-run home run in the fifth, but could draw no closer.

The RockHounds fall to 5-2 with the loss, while Springfield is now 2-5 to open the season.   The 'Hounds swept the previous three-game series between the clubs (April 5-7 at Security Bank Ballpark).

Notables

The clubs combined for five home runs - - Victor Roache and Lane Thomas had solo homers to put Springfield's final two runs on the board.

In addition to White and Ramirez, J.P. Sportman hit his first of the year, a solo shot to left in the eighth inning.

Most of Springfield's offense came at the expense of RockHounds starter Corey Walter, who was tagged for nine runs (earned) on 12 hits over five innings.

Completely Useless But Kinda Cool Stat(s)

With the bases loaded and one out in the third (and the Cardinals leading, 2-1), the batter was Darren Seferina. The Springfield second baseman, who stepped to the dish 0-for-23 to start the season, ripped his first hit of the 2018 Texas League campaign, a two-run double into the right field corner, and the Cardinals never looked back.
