Wild Wednesday; Hounds Fall in Tulsa

August 8, 2013

Tulsa, OK --- "It Gets Late Early Out There" - - - Yogi Berra

In his wonderful "Berra-ism," the Hall of Fame catcher was describing how it felt to adjust to playing in left field. He could also have been talking about Wednesday's game between the RockHounds and Tulsa Drillers.

In the first four innings, the clubs combined for 20 runs on 18 hits and six errors. In the last four-and-a-half innings, the teams scored three runs on combined three runs on four hits. Or, to paraphrase Yogi's line, "it got late early out there."

For the second straight night, Tulsa busted out to a substantial lead, with the 'Hounds responding twice. After Tulsa took a 3-0 lead in the first, the RockHounds came right back to tie the game in a three-run second, highlighted by Beau Taylor's two-run double.

The Drillers built the lead a second time, with two in the second and two more in the third, taking a 7-3 edge. The 'Hounds then came storming back with a five-run fourth, capped by Dusty Coleman's bases-loaded triple to straightaway center which gave the RockHounds an 8-7 lead.

This time it was Tulsa's turn to rally back, answering the 'Hounds five-run fourth with a five-spot of their own in the home half of the inning.   Tom Murphy drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a single into the left field corner, and Tulsa would not trail again.

Kibbles & Bits

-     D'Arby Myers (1-for-5) extended his hit streak to 17 games, tying Rey Navarro of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals for the longest hit streak in the 2013 Texas League season (Navarro's streak is no longer active). D'Arby is now 27-for-68 (.397) in the 17-gamer.

-     Dusty Coleman went 2-for-4 with a three-run triple, extending his hit streak to five games. While the streak is not a lengthy one, Coleman is 8-for-20 (.400) in those five games, with three doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI. Dusty has also now hit in 10-of-his-last-12 games, going 16-for-45 (.356) in those dozen games, with eight doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 RBI.

-     While it was a dismal night for pitching (the winning pitcher, Leuris Gomez, did not allow a run of his own, but gave up Coleman's triple and three inherited runners, the last of eight earned runs charged to Tulsa starter Tim Gustafson) reliever Blake Hassebrock was a bright spot for the 'Hounds. After struggling in his last two outings, the right-hander (called up from Advanced-A Stockton in late July) turned in his strongest performance to date. He faced and retired six batters, three by strikeout, registering 94-95 on the in-house radar gun.

-     Tulsa, first half champion in the North Division, won its fifth straight and ninth in its last 11 games.

-     Like Yogi said, "It gets late early."   In the first four innings, 53 batters came to the plate. In the last four-and-a-half innings, there were 36 "batters up."

-     The RockHounds' 10-game, 11-day road trip continues Thursday night (7:05) in Tulsa, followed by a three-game set in Springfield, Missouri, against the Cardinals (August 9-10-11). The 'Hounds' next home game is Tuesday, August 13.
