Pair of early round-trippers snuffs out RoughRiders
July 31, 2014

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (JULY 31, 2014) - Yeison Asencio lifted two Alec Asher offerings out of Wolff Stadium and the outfielder's hot stick fueled the Missions to a 5-1 victory over the Frisco RoughRiders on Thursday night.

Asencio struck early and often with home runs in the first and third innings, respectively. The Missions opened the night with a single, double and Asencio's three-run blast to leap out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The advantage grew to 4-0 when Robert Kral sacrificed home a score as San Antonio sent eight men to the plate in the opening frame.

Two innings later, on the first pitch of Asencio's second at-bat, the Dominican rifled a ball out of the yard to left center for his third multi home run game this season.

Asencio's second jack put the Missions up 5-1 in the third. The 'Riders scored in the previous inning on an RBI single by J.T. Wise, his 16th run driven in as a RoughRider.

Asher (8-10), the defending Texas League Pitcher of the Week, bowed out after five innings in which he allowed five runs and eight hits with one walk and one strikeout. His tenth losing decision tied the righty for the most in the Texas League.

San Antonio dipped into the home run well once again in the sixth inning. Cody Overbeck went deep, this time off Kyle Lotzkar, to make the score 6-1.

Blanked since the second inning, the 'Riders breathed a glimmer of life into the game in the eighth when Trever Adams notched a rulebook double in right field to bring home a pair and make the score 6-3. The two runs both reached via walks by reliever Adys Portillo, who battled to find the zone in his lone inning of work.

Adams has been a doubles machine for the RoughRiders and tied a career high with his 28th two-bagger of the season. The righty moves into a tie with Tulsa's Taylor Featherston for the second-most doubles in the Texas League.

But the 'Riders would creep no closer. R.J. Alvarez, formerly of the Arkansas Travelers, retired the bottom three men in the order to earn the save and secure the win for starter Joe Ross (2-0).

With the loss, Frisco (63-47; 23-18) drops its third straight series opener and falls to 13-12 against the Missions in the season series. The 'Riders conclude the month of July with an 18-12 record, which is the most wins in a month for the team in 2014.

San Antonio (57-54; 21-20) is now on a three-game winning streak and picks up its 30th win at home on the season.

The four-game series between the RoughRiders and the Missions continues on Friday at 7:05 p.m. CDT from Wolff Stadium in San Antonio. Coverage begins with the Frisco RoughRiders Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. on www.ridersbaseball.com.
