Extra-base hits seal Frisco's fate

RockHounds top RoughRiders in series opener
June 16, 2014

MIDLAND, TEXAS (JUNE 15, 2014) - Three extra-base hits scored six Midland runs and the RockHounds kept the visiting Frisco RoughRiders at arm's length with an 8-3 win Sunday night from Security Bank Ballpark.

Alex Gonzalez (1-1) suffered his first Double-A loss. The RoughRiders again limited the righty's pitch count and he lasted 2 2/3 innings with two runs allowed on five hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

Nate Long (7-2) responded to a rough outing against the RoughRiders on June 10 and notched the win on Sunday. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

The RockHounds scored in the second inning on a two-out infield single by Jefry Marte with runners on first and second. Chad Oberacker scored from second base on the play because the 'Riders failed to make the force out at either base.

Kyle Lotzkar relieved Gonzalez on the mound in the third inning with two outs and a runner on first. After Max Muncy singled, Oberacker tripled both runners home to put the 'Hounds up 3-0 and close Gonzalez' stat line.

Oberacker proceeded to score on a wild pitch and nudge the lead to 4-0.

For the second straight night, the RoughRiders turned in a productive fifth inning. Long's only rough frame came when he loaded the bases on a single and two walks with one out.

Teodoro Martinez wiped the bases clean with a three-RBI double to reinvigorate the ballgame and make the score 4-3 Midland. Martinez has driven in six runs over the last two games.

However, the 'Riders soon surrendered the three runs they gained in the fifth. In the inning's bottom half, Midland turned the tables and loaded the bases on Lotzkar via a walk and two strikeouts.

Frisco then called Randy Henry out of the bullpen. Making his first appearance with the 'Riders since his arrival from Triple-A Round Rock, Henry allowed a line-hugging double to Dusty Coleman, which cleared the bags and reinstated Midland's four-run lead. All three runs were charged to Lotzkar.

Henry's run column did not remain clear, either, as Coleman again victimized the righty for his second run-scoring double of the game. Coleman's second two-bagger gave Midland an 8-3 edge.

Frisco's offense, meanwhile, totaled one base hit after their robust fifth inning.

With the loss, the RoughRiders (40-28) fall to 2-3 on their current 12-game road trip and 7-6 against the RockHounds this season.

Midland (37-32) tallies its 20th home win this season and its 25th win in the Texas League South Division, tied with the RoughRiders for most divisional wins in the league this season.

Game two in this four-game set commences Monday at 6:30 p.m. CDT from Midland. Coverage begins at 6:10 p.m. on www.ridersbaseball.com with the Frisco RoughRiders Pregame Show.

The 'Riders next play at Dr Pepper Ballpark on Wednesday, June 25 against the Arkansas Travelers at 7:05 p.m. For tickets to see the 'Riders in 2014, call 972-731-9200, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.ridersbaseball.com.
