Fun in the Fifth

Big middle inning sparks rout of San Antonio
July 13, 2014

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (JULY 13, 2014) - The Frisco RoughRiders pounced for six runs in the fifth inning against the San Antonio Missions en route to an 11-2 blowout at Wolff Stadium Sunday night to open a four-game series.

The 'Riders lead 3-0 at the top of the fifth against starting pitcher Josh Geer (5-8) and the Missions. After Guilder Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and Odubel Herrera singled, a ringing two-run double from major-league rehabber Jim Adduci put the 'Riders up 5-0.

Even after Trever Adams lined into a double play, the RoughRiders stayed hot and scorched San Antonio for four more runs with two outs on the board in the fifth.

Geovany Soto, another rehabber, kicked off a run of five sequential hits with a single to left. A rulebook double by Chris Grayson momentarily prevented Soto from scoring until newcomer J.T. Wise, signed by the Rangers out of independent ball, belted a two-bagger to put Frisco up a walking stick.

Jake Skole followed with the second ground rule double of the inning and ratchet the lead to 8-0. Hanser Alberto knocked in Skole with the fourth consecutive extra-base hit for the 'Riders (a triple) and put the game beyond a shadow of a doubt.

The spree came against Geer, who allowed nine runs on 14 hits with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings. Frisco went on to tally three more base hits and tie a season-high with 17 in the game.

One of the final three hits left the yard off the bat of Adduci, who in his last two games, has totaled four hits in six at-bats with two runs, a double, a home run and five RBI. The big leaguer also has a sacrifice fly and a stolen base thus far over the course of his rehab assignment.

Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (3-3) notched his second straight win on the hill. He allowed five hits over five innings with one walk and four strikeouts. The Missions placed runners in scoring position in three innings against the right-hander, but Gonzalez never allowed a man to touch home.

With the victory, Frisco (52-39; 12-10) moves to 9-8 against the Missions this season and wins for just the third time in nine attempts at Wolff Stadium in 2014.

San Antonio (47-46; 11-12) drops its sixth straight ballgame on the heels of a four-game sweep by the Midland RockHounds.

Game two in the four-series tips off at 7:05 p.m. on Monday in San Antonio. Coverage begins at 6:40 p.m. CDT on www.RidersBaseball.com with the Frisco RoughRiders Pregame Show.

The 'Riders next return to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Thursday, July 17 for a four-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks at 7:05 p.m.
