'Riders thump Drillers to open series
August 16, 2014

TULSA, OKLAHOMA (AUGUST 15, 2014) - Another strong showing from right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson and a four-hit night by Teodoro Martinez helped the Frisco RoughRiders overcome the Tulsa Drillers 8-2 on Friday night at ONEOK Field.

After a scoreless first, the 'Riders sparked a two-out rally with three straight singles in the second, the last of which brought Martinez home to put Frisco on the board.

Tulsa responded with a bang in the bottom of the frame. Trevor Story, a native of Irving, Texas who homered against the 'Riders at Dr Pepper Ballpark last week, repeated that feat with a two-run shot on Friday.

The blast came off Thompson (2-0), a native of Rockwall, Texas and former teammate of Story with the Dallas Patriots, a high school club team.

Now behind 2-1, the 'Riders did not blink and instead started the merry-go-round against Tulsa starter Richard Castillo (3-11) in the third. Frisco batted around the lineup and scored four runs (three earned) on five hits. Jorge Alfaro, Joey Gallo, and Nomar Mazara each doubled in the inning as Frisco grabbed the lead for good.

Two innings later, Martinez extended the RoughRiders advantage to 6-2 when he singled for the third time in as many trips to the plate. The Venezuelan outfielder would go to notch his second four-hit game of the season against Tulsa and drive in three runs. In the process, he extended his consecutive hitting streak to nine games, a season high.

With the game already in hand, the 'Riders brought the hurt to reliever Nelson Gonzalez. Much of the damage was self-inflicted, however, as Gonzalez allowed a walk and hit two batters out of the first four faced.

Frisco had already scored a run to make the score 8-2 on an RBI double by Guilder Rodriguez when the Drillers improbably turned a 5-4-3 triple play to end the inning. It was the second triple play in the Texas League this season.

The Story home run notwithstanding, Thompson ended his tale on a positive note and earned his second win as a RoughRider. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits over five innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

A platoon force of Will Lamb, Erik Hamren and Keone Kela shut down the Drillers the rest of the way and allowed a total of one base hit over the final four frames.

With the win, Frisco (71-52; 31-23) snaps a two-game slide and remains tied with the Midland RockHounds for first place in the South Division second-half standings. The 'Riders lead the Hounds by 2 1/2 games in the overall standings.

Tulsa (61-61; 23-30) falls to 2-7 against the 'Riders in 2014 and has yet to defeat Frisco at ONEOK Field this season.

The RoughRiders continue their three-game road series with the Drillers on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Coverage begins with the Frisco RoughRiders Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. on www.ridersbaseball.com.
