Three RoughRiders honored by Rangers

Rougned Odor, Luke Jackson & Alex Claudio win minor league awards
January 14, 2014

FRISCO, TEXAS (JANUARY 14, 2014) - Three Frisco RoughRiders have been announced as minor league award winners by the Texas Rangers for the 2013 season. Second baseman Rougned Odor was named the Tom Grieve Player of the Year, right-handed starter Luke Jackson was selected as the Nolan Ryan Pitcher of the Year and left-hander Alex Claudio was honored as the organization's Reliever of the Year.

The award winners will be recognized by the Rangers at the 2014 Dr Pepper Awards Dinner on Friday, January 24 in Grapevine. They will be joined by RoughRiders pitching coach Jeff Andrews, who will be a co-recipient (along with Round Rock pitching coach Brad Holman) of the Bobby Jones Development Man of the Year Award.

The 19-year-old Odor played the last month of the 2013 season with Frisco after beginning the year with Advanced-A Myrtle Beach. In 130 games between the two levels, Odor hit .305/.365/.474 with 41 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs, 78 runs batted in, 85 runs scored and 32 steals in 42 attempts. A midseason and postseason Carolina League All-Star, the Venezuelan led all full-season Rangers farmhands in batting average and tied for the third-most doubles in Minor League Baseball.

Jackson, 22, also joined the RoughRiders in early August after spending the majority of the season in Myrtle Beach. He dominated Texas League hitters, allowing two runs and 13 hits with 30 strikeouts in 27 innings at the Double-A level. Over the course of the entire season Jackson pitched in 25 games (23 starts), going 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA, 134 strikeouts, 59 walks, 92 hits allowed and a .202 opponents' batting average in 128 innings. He led all Texas minor leaguers in ERA, was second in strikeouts and tied for third in victories. The Floridian was the Carolina League's starting pitcher in the circuit's All-Star Game versus the California League.

Claudio, 21, split his season between Frisco and Single-A Hickory and was stellar out of the bullpen in both stops. The side-arming Puerto Rican made 45 relief appearances and went 4-6 with a 1.83 ERA, 11 saves, 91 strikeouts, 18 walks, 50 hits allowed and a .183 opponents' batting average in 78.2 innings. Claudio was a South Atlantic League midseason All-Star and his strong first half earned him a direct promotion to Double-A in mid-June.

Additionally, Myrtle Beach outfielder Jake Skole, 22, was named the Rangers' minor league Defender of the Year.

Opening Day 2014 for the RoughRiders is Thursday, April 3 when the regular season officially begins. Frisco will host the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at 7:05 p.m. as part of a six-game season-opening home stand.
