SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Cionel to The Show! The Houston Astros announced on Friday afternoon that the club has recalled Round Rock Express LHP Cionel Pérez prior to the team's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night at Minute Maid Park.
In a corresponding move, Houston optioned RHP Brady Rodgers back to Round Rock. Rodgers began the 2019 season on the Express Opening Day roster prior to his promotion to the Astros on May 21.
Pérez appeared in 10 games with the E-Train, including nine starts, prior to his promotion. The lefty posted an 0-1 record with a 6.44 ERA (26 ER/36.1 IP) during his time in Round Rock. Pérez racked up 34 strikeouts to 21 walks while donning an E-Train uniform.
A native of Cuba, Pérez is returning to Houston for the second straight season as he posted four stints with the club in 2018. After making his major league debut on June 29, Pérez posted no record with a 3.97 ERA (5 ER/11.1 IP) in eight relief appearances with the Astros. He struck out 12 to seven walks during his time in Houston a year ago.
Rodgers returns to Round Rock after going 0-1 with a 15.53 ERA (23 ER/13.1 IP) in eight games, including one start, with Houston in his first big league action since the 2016 season. The righty opened the year with Round Rock healthy after missing parts of the last two seasons following right elbow surgery in 2017.
Prior to his promotion, Rodgers shined with the Express out of the gate, going a perfect 4-0 with a 3.22 ERA after allowing 16 earned runs on 42 hits in 44.2 innings of work across eight games, including seven starts. The Richmond, Texas native racked up 32 strikeouts to 16 walks while holding his opposition to a .246 batting average during his first stint in Round Rock.
The Express open a three-game series against the Salt Lake Bees (Los Angeles Angels affiliate) on Friday night at Smith's Ballpark. Round Rock RHP Jose Urquidy (2-0, 4.12) is scheduled to start opposite Salt Lake RHP Jose Suarez (2-0, 3.91). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m.
