Turning Point
Akron's David Speer and Robbie Aviles combined to throw five shutout innings to guide the RubberDucks to victory in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
Winging It
In Game 1, Akron's Shao-Ching Chiang made his Canal Park debut and went 5.1 innings giving up five runs on seven hits. Chiang suffered his first loss as a member of the RubberDucks. On the mound for the Rumble Ponies was Robert Gsellman who is on a rehab assignment from the parent club New York Mets. Gsellman pitched like a big leaguer throwing six shutout innings, allowing just three hits while fanning five RubberDuck hitters. In Game 2, David Speer received a spot start for Akron and worked 2.2 innings not allowing a run on one hit and struck out four. Robbie Aviles entered out of the pen and worked 2.1 scoreless striking out three. Leandro Linares worked a scoreless sixth but did not convert on a save opportunity in the seventh, giving up a homer to Binghamton's L.J. Mazzilli. Manager Mark Budzinski turned to Cameron Hill who recorded the last two outs of the game recording his 10th save of the season. Binghamton's starter Marcos Molina threw a complete game but was the losing pitcher. Molina gave up two runs on six hits, walking four and striking out three.
Duck Tales
In Game 1, the RubberDucks lone run came when Yu Chang belted his 21st home run of the year off the inflatable slide in right field. Chang's 21 home runs rank him 4th in the Eastern League. In Game 2, the Ducks struck first when Bobby Bradley hit a sacrifice fly to score Todd Hankins in the first inning. It was Bradley's 74th RBI, which ranks 3rd in the Eastern League. The Ducks added another run when Ivan Castillo hit an RBI double down the right field line to score Taylor Murphy from first base. Utility man Todd Hankins recorded his first three hit game of the season going a perfect 3-3 all singles in Game 2.
Notebook
Immediately following the third inning of Game 2, the game was halted for the Home Run for Life ceremony, something far more important than the game of baseball…. To raise awareness for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders Celebration, two four-year-olds fighting such diseases ran the bases as both teams lined up along the foul line to cheer them on during their home run trot… This was the RubberDucks fifth year doing the Home Run for Life ceremony… The RubberDucks also wore special uniforms designed by Landon Skidmore (8), a former patient who beat cancer at Akron Children's Hospital… Time of Games: 2:08/1:57… Attendance: 7,301.
