B-Mets Split Pair with Fisher Cats

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets won the completion of suspended game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-5, before falling in their regularly-scheduled game, 5-2 on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Kevin Plawecki led the offensive attack in Binghamton's victory with a five-RBI game.

RESUMED GAME: B-Mets 7, Fisher Cats 5

Binghamton and New Hampshire picked up this matchup from where they left off after it was suspended due to rain on Tuesday. The B-Mets led 6-0 at the time thanks to a huge game by Plawecki. In two at-bats he had a two-run double and a three-run home run. The five RBI were the most by a B-Met in a game this season.

Tyler Pill picked up the action in the third inning on Wednesday after Matt Bowman pitched two scoreless frames the night before. Pill gave up a lead-off double to Jonathan Jones. After a couple of outs, Andy Burns walked. With two on, Ryan Schimpf launched a home run over the right-field wall to cut the Binghamton lead in half, 6-3.

New Hampshire made it even closer in the fifth. Jon Berti started things with a triple. A couple of batters later Schimpf reached on a fielder's choice, Berti scored to make the score 6-4. Schimpf finished the game with four RBI.

One more Fisher Cat batter crossed the plate in the sixth inning. Kevin Nolan smacked a double to left field. After two outs, Jorge Flores tripled to right-center field to bring home Nolan and make it a one-run game.

The B-Mets got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Wilfredo Tovar singled with one out and stole second base. Nelfi Zapata then singled with two outs to bring home Tovar and make the score 7-5.

Adam Kolarek and Chasen Bradford pitched a scoreless final three innings out of the bullpen to lock down the win. Bradford picked up his 11th save of the season. Pill (2-5) earned his second win of the year after working four innings and striking out six. Matt Boyd (0-2) gave up all six runs before the game was suspended on Tuesday and was tacked with the loss.

GAME TWO: Fisher Cats 5, B-Mets 2

New Hampshire got on the board against Binghamton starter Rainy Lara in the third. Nolan singled to lead off the frame, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. With Schimpf at the plate and two outs, a passed ball by Kevin Plawecki prompted Nolan to scamper home with the game's first run. Lara was injured on the play and left the game. Hamilton Bennett came on in relief and allowed back-to-back doubles to Schimpf and Hector Gimenez. Another run scored to put the Fisher Cats on top 2-0.

The score stayed that way until the sixth. Gimenez worked a lead-off walk with Jon Velasquez on the mound. A couple of batters later, Matt Newman tripled with two outs to make the score 3-0. The next batter, Michael Crouse, singled home Newman to make it a four-run game.

The B-Mets got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Tovar reached on an error by Nolan at shortstop. Johnson tripled to bring Tovar home for the first Binghamton run. After two outs, Matt Clark doubled home Johnson to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.

But New Hampshire crossed the plate one more time in the seventh. With Ryan Fraser on the mound, Berti walked, stole second and moved to third on an error by Fraser. Shimpf then grounded out to second with one out, Berti scored and the lead was 7-5.

Fisher Cats reliever Randy Boone sent the B-Mets down in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn his third save. Casey Lawrence (3-4) started for New Hampshire and allowed just two unearned runs in four innings to pick up the win. Lara (4-2) took the loss. He gave up one run in 2-2/3 innings.
