Binghamton Gets Just Enough in Opener, 3-2

ALTOONA, PA - The Binghamton Mets mustered just five hits, but squeaked past the Altoona Curve, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Wilfredo Tovar and Blake Forsythe each provided run-producing extra-base hits and three B-Mets relievers combined for 3-2/3 scoreless innings of relief in the series opener.

Binghamton pieced together a pair of singles and received some help from the Curve to get on the board in the first inning. Danny Muno started the contest with a hard-hit single to right field off Altoona starter Nick Kingham. Cesar Puello followed by smoking a grounder to third. Adalberto Santos made a diving stop to snare the smash, but fired an errant throw to second, allowing Muno to move to third. The B-Mets second baseman scampered home with the game's first run on a passed ball by Carlos Paulino.

B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon made the lead stand, posting five shutout innings to open his 15th start of the season. The southpaw scattered five singles, stranded the bases loaded in the fourth and racked up four strikeouts along the way.

Kingham issued five walks from the second to the fifth inning, including three straight to open the third, but never paid the price. Binghamton finally broke through in the sixth. Darrell Ceciliani floated a single to start the inning and scored when Tovar launched a triple to the right-field alley. Forsythe added to the lead and, ended Kingham's night, with an RBI double to right. The two-bagger gave the B-Mets a three-run advantage.

With a three-run cushion, Cohoon surrendered two singles to start the sixth and gave way to Ryan Fraser. Justin Howard greeted the righty with a pinch-hit RBI double to left center and Paulino cut Binghamton's lead to one with an RBI groundout to third. Fraser bounced back and stranded the tying run on second by retiring pinch-hitter Andy Vasquez.

Fraser fell back into trouble in the seventh after allowing a one-out double to Santos. Chase Huchingson inherited the potential tying run and left him aboard, retiring Gregory Polanco on a line out to first and Alex Dickerson on a fly out to left.

Altoona put together one final threat in the eighth with a pair of singles off Huchingson. Jeff Walters got the call and retired Kelson Brown to shut the door. The B-Mets closer returned to post a perfect ninth, earning his league-leading 30th save of the season.

Cohoon (6-3) allowed two runs on seven hits over 5-1/3 innings in the victory. Kingham (3-3) walked a season-high six and surrendered three runs (two earned) over five innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (67-41) continue their three-game set against the Curve on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. LHP Darin Gorski toes the rubber against RHP Jameson Taillon. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:45 PM.
