Gorski's Gem Caps Series Sweep, 5-0

Lefty tosses complete-game, shutout
May 26, 2014

BINGHAMTON, NY - Darin Gorski threw his first career complete-game shutout to lead the Binghamton Mets past the New Britain Rock Cats, 5-0, on Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Gorski surrendered two hits and faced three over the minimum to secure a four-game series sweep, Binghamton's first since April 2012.

Gorski's big day started on the wrong note as Corey Wimberly led off the game by lining the first pitch into the left-field corner for a double. The southpaw responded by retiring 14 straight batters. Wimberly proved to be the only Rock Cat to reach second base against Gorski.

Binghamton gave Gorski the lead early thanks to some shaky New Britain fielding. Kyle Johnson walked to start the bottom of the first. With one out, Rock Cats second baseman Tony Thomas opened the door by booting a potential double play ball. Matt Clark stroked a single into right, plating Johnson. Clark dashed for second on the throw home, drawing an errant throw from catcher Kyle Knudson. Kevin Plawecki raced home with Binghamton's second run when the toss skipped into center field.

The B-Mets doubled their lead in the fourth. Darrell Ceciliani laced a double into the gap in right-center field with one out. Dustin Lawley followed by blasting his fourth home run of the season of the left-field wall.

The offensive production was more than enough for Gorski. Brad Boyer's single in the fifth was the last hit the lefty surrendered. He posted a perfect sixth and seventh and used a double play to erase a walk in the eighth. After a throwing error by Lawley prolonged the ninth inning, Gorski induced Kennys Vargas to pop out to second on his 107th pitch to secure the shutout

Gorski (4-2) struck out six and issued one walk in the 13th two-hitter in franchise history. New Britain starter Virgil Vasquez (2-2) allowed four runs (two earned) over six innings in the loss. DJ Baxendale allowed a run on a sac fly by Johnson in his two innings of relief.

The B-Mets (28-21) continue home stand and begin a series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Tuesday at 6:35 PM. RHP Matt Bowman goes for Binghamton opposite LHP Matt Boyd for New Hampshire. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show, starting at 6:20 PM, can be heard on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and on the Binghamton Mets Baseball Network via the TuneIn App.
