Late Lead Evaporates Again in 5-3 Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets let a ninth-inning lead get away for the second straight night and fell to the New Britain Rock Cats, 5-3, on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. Cody Satterwhite gave up three runs in the ninth and blew his second straight save opportunity after not doing so since May 22.

The Rock Cats got a single from Nate Hanson off of Satterwhite to start the rally in the ninth with one out. Mike Gonzales followed with a single to right field, but the ball got away from Travis Taijeron and Hanson came all the way around from first and scored. Gonzales went to second and replaced by Jorge Polanco. Reynaldo Rodriguez moved the runner to third with a base knock. Tony Thomas scored Polanco with a hit. Both runners moved up a bag on a wild pitch. Mike Kvasnicka grounded out to second base, but one more run crossed the plate to make the score 5-3.

Binghamton was the first to put a run on the board in the first. After going homerless as a team for six straight games, Dilson Herrera hit a one-out shot off of Jason Wheeler to left field to put Binghamton on top, 1-0.

The Rock Cats answered in the second. Thomas smacked a solo shot off of Greg Peavey over the wall in right-center field to tie the game at one. 

The score stayed that way until the seventh. Gonzales doubled with one out. After a ground out, Thomas singled to plate the runner and put New Britain on top for the first time, 2-1. 

Binghamton took the lead back in the eighth against Edgar Ibarra. Herrera singled and moved to second on a Jayce Boyd walk. T.J. Rivera brought both runners home a bloop single down the right-field line to put the B-Mets on top, 3-2.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Peavey tossed eight innings and allowed one run with five strikeouts. Wheeler surrendered one run in seven frames. Ibarra (2-1) suffered a blown save, but worked a scoreless ninth to nail down the victory. Satterwhite (3-2) has allowed five runs in the last two games. 

The B-Mets (83-55) hit the road for their final series of the season on Friday at Richmond. The game gets going at 7:05 PM and Binghamton sends LHP Steve Matz against LHP Adalberto Mejia for the Flying Squirrels. POSTGAME NOTES: After starting the season 63-2 when leading after eight innings, Binghamton is 0-2 in their last two games…Rivera went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games…Brandon Nimmo saw his nine-game hitting streak end...The team finishes the regular season with a 45-26 record at NYSEG Stadium.
