Offense Quacktastic in Doubleheader Sweep

AKRON, OH - The Binghamton Mets offense collected 22 hits, including five home runs, in two games to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Akron RubberDucks on Tuesday night at Canal Park. In the opener, the B-Mets scored six runs in the first inning and Angel Cuan tossed his first career complete game in an 8-1 win. Binghamton overcame a three-run deficit and used a seven-run inning to take the nightcap by a 10-5 score.

GAME ONE - B-Mets 8, RubberDucks 1

The Binghamton Mets offense erupted in the first inning against Cody Anderson. Kyle Johnson started the monster inning by crushing Anderson's third pitch over the left-field wall for his second home run of the season.

Brian Burgamy followed Johnson's blast by looking at strike three and was tossed for arguing the call. Having lost their second baseman for the game, the B-Mets marched on. Kevin Plawecki punched a single down the first-base line, starting a stretch of six consecutive hits off Anderson.

With the bases loaded, Dustin Lawley ripped a three-run double down the third-base line. Darrell Ceciliani capped the six-run inning by launching a two-run homer over the right-center field wall.

Burgamy's ejection forced Pedro Lopez to improvise defensively. The B-Mets manager put backup catcher Nelfi Zapata at third base and sent Dustin Lawley across the diamond for his first career appearance at second base. With a pair of infielders out of position, the B-Mets held the fort. Zapata made a pair of strong back-handed plays, while Lawley contributed with three assists.

Binghamton's offense was not limited to the first inning. Jayce Boyd added to the lead with a bloop RBI single to right. Ceciliani tacked on in the third by launching his second home run of the game, a solo shot off the batter's eye in center field.

The offensive attack was more than enough for B-Mets starter Angel Cuan. The southpaw scattered three singles in his first three innings and cruised into the seventh without allowing a run. He faced one over the minimum through six blank frames, retiring ten straight batters at one point.

Francisco Lindor ended the stretch with a leadoff single in the seventh and took second on a groundout. Joe Wendle ended the shutout bid by lining a two-out, RBI single to center. Cuan shook off the score and retired Tony Wolters to secure his first career complete game.

Cuan (2-3) allowed one run on five singles while striking out four to earn the win. The southpaw did not allow any runner past first base until his final inning. Anderson (2-4) was tagged for eight runs on ten hits over three innings in the defeat.

GAME TWO - B-Mets 10, RubberDucks 5

Akron jumped on B-Mets starter Hamilton Bennett in the nightcap. In his first professional start, Bennett allowed the first five he faced to reach. With the bases loaded Bryan LaHair put Akron on the board by floating an RBI single to center. Alex Lavisky brought home two more by pulling a double down the left-field line. Bennett bounced back and collected three straight outs to limit the damage to three runs.

The B-Mets chipped away at the deficit in the second. Dustin Lawley started the comeback by blasting a leadoff home run against Matt Packer, his second in as many nights. Darrell Ceciliani followed by lacing a triple to center and scurried home on a passed ball by Jake Lowery.

Bennett recovered nicely after his rocky first inning. Following Lavisky's double, the southpaw retired eight of the final nine batters he faced. He exited after allowing five hits and striking out three batters in three innings of work.

Binghamton tied the game two innings later. Ceciliani took first base on a fielder's choice in the fourth, stole second with two outs and came home when Xorge Carrillo threaded a single into left.

The B-Mets turned a nail-biter into a blowout with seven runs in the fifth inning. After a leadoff walk to Rylan Sandoval, Brian Burgamy chased Packer from the game with a single. Kevin Plawecki greeted reliever Adam Miller by punching a two-run single into right, giving Binghamton the lead for good. Binghamton hung five more runs on Miller, highlighted by an RBI double by Travis Taijeron and a two-run homer by Xorge Carrillo, his first of the season.

Chism (1-0) stranded two over a pair of blank innings to earn his first career Double-A victory. Packer (1-1) allowed five runs on six hits over 4-1/3 innings in the loss. Jon Velasquez allowed two runs in the seventh, his second inning of relief before Jack Leathersich ended the game by striking out Jake Lowery, the only batter he faced.

The B-Mets (34-30) continue their five-game series against the first-place RubberDucks on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Matt Bowman takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Toru Murata.
