RubberDucks Paddle Away from B-Mets, 10-2

Binghamton drops series opener in Akron
June 9, 2014

AKRON, OH - The Binghamton Mets cut a three-run deficit down to one only to watch the Akron RubberDucks plate seven unanswered runs in a 10-2 defeat on Monday night at Canal Park. The B-Mets were held to five hits and suffered their eighth loss in the last ten games.

The RubberDucks jumped on the board in the first against Hansel Robles. The righty fell into trouble immediately, filling the bases on two singles and a walk to open his third start against Akron. Robles limited the damage in the inning to one run on an RBI fielder's choice by Tony Wolters.

Robles settled down after his bumpy start and held the RubberDucks hitless over the next three innings. Following his walk in the opening frame, he put down twelve of the next thirteen Akron hitters he faced.

His cruise came to an end in the fifth when he walked Jordan Smith to start the inning. Two batters later, Tyler Naquin golfed a 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall for a two-run homer, kicking Akron's lead to 3-0.

RubberDucks starter Duke von Schamann silenced the B-Mets offense through five shutout innings. Following a walk to open his start, he put down ten straight B-Mets with Kevin Plawecki's single, Binghamton's first hit, snapping the stretch in the fourth.

Binghamton finally got to the tall righty in the sixth inning. After Kyle Johnson was thrown out attempting to steal second, von Schamann opened the door back up by walking Brian Burgamy with two outs. Plawecki made him pay and put the B-Mets on the board by lacing a double into the left-field alley. Dustin Lawley cut Akron's lead to one in the seventh by launching his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, over the left-field wall.

Akron answered back in the seventh against Chase Huchingson. Jordan Smith reached to start the inning on an error. Ollie Linton followed by grounding a single to right. Smith raced from first to third and dashed home with Travis Taijeron's throw from right bounced off his back and rolled away. Francisco Lindor capped the inning by looping at RBI single to right.

The RubberDucks puck the game out of reach with a five-run eighth inning. Wolters launched a two-run homer off Huchingson and Linton tacked on with a two-run double later in the frame off Adam Kolarek.

von Schamann (3-0) allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings to collect his third win of the season. Robles (3-4) was tagged for three runs on three hits over six innings of work in his second straight defeat. Bryan Price closed Akron's pitching tab with two scoreless innings for his first save.
