Trenton Stumps B-Mets, 2-0

BINGHAMTON, NY -Despite a complete game gem from Darin Gorski, the Binghamton Mets were held to one hit and were shut out by the Trenton Thunder, 2-0 on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. Reegie Corona hit a two-run home run to drive in the only runs of the game, and Binghamton was shut out for the fifth time this season.

Offensively, the B-Mets had their chances to score in the contest. The B-Mets got on base with seven walks, three hit-by-pitches and one fielding error, but stranded 11 men on base. Their biggest threat came in the third inning. Trenton starter Nik Turley walked the bases loaded in the third inning, but Richard Lucas bounced into an inning ending double play to end the threat.  

 Gorski matched the scoreless effort for five innings on the mound for Binghamton. After allowing a leadoff single to Yeral Sanchez in the second inning, the lefty retired 13 consecutive hitters. That stretch ended when Ramon Flores singled with two outs in the sixth. Corona was the next batter, and he blasted his fourth homer of the season for the first and only two runs of the game. After the home run, Gorski retired 10 of his final 11 batters.

Turley was taken out of the game after six innings. The lefty struck out eight, walked five, and threw 114 pitches before being replaced by David Herndon. Herndon walked one and hit another in 1.2 innings, but did not surrender a base hit. Closer Tommy Kahnle entered the game with two outs in the eighth inning. Cesar Puello was in scoring position, but Darrell Ceciliani struck out to end the threat.

Binghamton threatened again in the ninth against Kahnle. Alonzo Harris walked with two outs, and immediately moved to second on defensive indifference. Danny Muno then hit a groundball that was booted by Andrew Clark at first base, putting the tying run on first base. Josh Rodriguez followed however, and flied out in foul territory to end the game.

Turley (8-5) picked up the win; it was his first since June 26. Gorski (3-1) threw the second complete game of the season for the B-Mets, but was tagged with the loss. It was his longest outing of his career.

The B-Mets (64-39) and Thunder (53-51) return to the field on Friday night. They are scheduled for a doubleheader beginning at 5:35 PM. The B-Mets will send RHP Erik Goeddel to the mound against Trenton's LHP Jeremy Bleich in the first game of the day. In the nightcap, RHP Greg Peavey will throw for Binghamton against RHP Mikey O'Brien. Both games are scheduled for seven innings, and the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show will start at 5:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
